If the T/C's work, I will be a buyer for a 200/2.8 HS G. Here is very short description of Minolta T/C's for anyone who may end up getting one:
1. Minolta APO Original -- has 5 contact pin (for non-HS APO lenses)
2. Minolta APO II -- has 5 contact pin (for HS APO lenses)
3. Minolta APO (D) -- has 8 contact pin, will AF with SSM lenses and (D) lenses compatible.
Minolta APO teleconverters are designed specifically for certain Minolta lenses only, all of the Minolta AF Telephoto G lenses such as 135/2.8 STF, 200/2.8, 300/2.8, 300/2.8 SSM, 300/4, 400/4.5, 600/4, 200/4, 70-200/2.8 SSM etc.
Minolta APO Teleconverter has the first element almost flushed to the lens mount, the clearance is only 1mm therefore it is not possible to use Minolta APO teleconverter with other lenses.

No Minolta T/C works with the 80-200/2.8's. But, the Kenko do work pretty well....Show more →

Also, for those of you looking at the 200/2.8, get the Mino 1.4x APO original. The gear ratio of version 2 slows down the HS. Optically they are the same.

No-- I mean the original. If you research it, you'll find they changed the gear ratio to slow down the HS lenses for focus accuracy on film, I think with a 2:1 ratio. That's not something we have to worry about with later fast focusing film, SLR and mirrorless, so get the Minolta APO original that has the 1:1 gear ratio (no crippling).

Do not use the original Minolta TC with the high speed lenses as the the gearing over torques the lens gears...that is why the 2 (same as Sony) were developed. Though usable, Minolta knew what they were doing when they developed the 2nd generation. The HS lenses are very fast (probably faster than the ssm lenses). I doubt the new adapter will allow TC's.

Just wondering, do you have any documentation for this? Because I’ve read that the HS lended to overshoot or miss focus on film and so these were developed to slow them down.
The Original 1.4x is only moving the lenses at their original gear ratio, so why would that hurt the lenses?

While there is a lot of good info there, it doesn't get into any details that you shared. That being said, I would only use the HS t/c with an HS lens.
I know that page but that doesn’t address my question. I’ve read a decent amount from people that have used both and the consensus seems to be the type I or original teleconverters are more desirable for HS lenses if you would like the full speed.
I noticed that they are also generally harder to find, but I’m not sure if that’s because they are older or less were made or because they’re more desirable etc.

True, but various 3rd party adapters work to some degree. I don’t want to go down that wormhole, but if you or other people are really curious it’s there to research.
I found the LAEA4 horrible, even When it came out. So I really don’t even know why one would bother if it was compromised.

A-mount user for nearly 35 years. Just sold off the some of my A-mount glass one of which was the SAL300 f2.8 II. Great piece of glass but it was time to part with it because I just don't shoot with it anymore. I'm gonna list my Minolta 80-200 f2.8 (white) and Tamron 15-30 f2.8 next week. Both have been used adapted with the LA-EA3 and hold up well to the A7R4 sensor res.

I don't recall the details, but I alway s do my research before buying. As a long time Minolta film user I had the regular Minolta APO TC's for my Minolta HS screw mount lenses. It was recommended at the time for the newest bodies.

Kenko DGX teleconverters work well with most any A-mount lens with all of the LA-EA adapters. Their older 8-pin chipped teleconverters work with most non-motorized lenses. The even older 5-pin chipped teleconverters work with most 5-pin lenses.
Kenko also has unchipped teleconverters that sort of allow AF. For example I have an 8-pin 1.5X MC4 DG. The chipped 1.4X MC4 DGX version gives better AF and the focal length and aperture reported to the camera are adjusted. The chipped teleconverters also work stacked.
The screw-drive reduction gearing in teleconverters increases torque which can eat the AF gears in lenses. Many of the Kenko teleconverters also have gears prone to stripping.

What I would like to understand if Sony really thinks of implementing screw AF even to at least third gen A7 and A9/II via FW update or we are just being victims of some marketing stunt to make the latest A7xx A6xx models more desiderable (but it would be strange at best as a decision). Another question: if some sort of latest FW is need for it to AF with screw-driven lenses, why is the newest A7SIII mentioned Ami g the compatible models? Is all pretty puzzling to me..
I'd be pretty interested in all those nice Minolta lenses, but MF only of course would be a no go for me. I'm particularly interested in the 300 F2.8 APO HS (the no SSM version, too expensive and rare), any experience with it? Would it still be good on modern High-MP bodies?

The Minolta/Sony TC's do function with the LA-EAx adapters, but with a big handicap: aperture is limited to wide-open - you cannot change aperture. With 3rd party TC's such as Kenko (would recommend the Kenko AF 1.4x 300 Pro DG Sony) there are no such limitations.

Received the mino 100/2 today and it's such a beauty. It looks like it was never used!
Didn't have the chance to test it today but I rented the LA-EA4 adapter while waiting for the "EA5".
