First world problems
I just got a puppy, and I’v been shooting MF for over 90% of my work for the last 7 years.
Having a quick focusing 80-200 2.8 HS could be a very welcome option for me at times.
I think I’ll pick up an 80-200/2.8 and compare it to my 200/2.8 and only keep one.

Got the Mino 200/2.8 APO today and it's smaller than I thought. Very well built and love the built-in hood.
Tested on the A7R IV and it's sharp from center to extreme corner (as posted here) but it's outstanding at f/5.6 (using my dumb adapter)
It looks like it will beat my Contax 100-300 @200mm and f/5.6. (much lower LaCA for sure)
Rendering is very smooth and I can see some SA wide open which I really like. Fingers crossed the LA-EA5 will give it good AF capability.

Nice copy Fred! Yours from Japan made it to you before my copy from the US
I can't wait to get reacquainted with mine. I had it and the 80-200/2.8 in my film days, but found the prime performed noticeablely better, and always loved the petite size. I sold the 80-200 early on, but kept the 200APO to the end. I would have kept it for my DSLR but the film to flange length of the mounts was not compatible for an adapter.
The real test for it will be against my Angenieux 180/2.3 APO. Superb lens.

I forget how tiny it is. Wait till you see the size of the 100/2.

The comparison I want to see is against the Tamron 2.8/70-200. (EDIT I meant the e mount 70-180)
It’s be more fun to try one of the Minoltas, but the Tamron could well be as good...

Will you be posting the Ang/Mino comparison? Would love to see.
Lots of ghosting on the 200 2.8...but the files are just lovely.

Could you advise regarding its sharpness in 61mp?
I had decided to get the Tamron 70-180 but since the new adapter was announced the Minolta 80-200 becomes again a good option.
So first question is about sharpness In a7riv.
Second about rendering - we already know it is good, probably better than the Tamron.
Third AF speed/accuracy in centre and peripheral focus points - we will know when the adapter is out. I’m really hoping for better performance than canon lenses + metabones/MC-11.

Looks like a very clean copy. That white paint usually falls off if you just look at it too hard, so that one's obviously had a charmed life.

Sharpness is somewhat variable. It's soft/glowy wide open, but very sharp stopped down. But it's difficult to really evaluate it so far, since getting critical focus manually is tricky (at least for me).
Rendering is lovely, old-school. And I've always liked the Minolta color response.
It's very unlikely that this vintage screw-drive lens will keep up with the speed of Canon lenses on the MC-11. But I expect accuracy to be good.
Here's a couple old snapshots showing rendering, from an a99v.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I’m mostly interested in accuracy rather than speed. I currently use the old canon 80-200L with metabones and although it’s sharp when focuses properly, it is hit and miss for portraits in medium light.
Regarding sharpness I have read very good reviews even wide open in 42mp so I was a bit surprised with your comment about softness. Maybe it is a matter of achieving critical focus manually so let’s wait for the adapter for a more reliable conclusion.

In anticipation of this adapter, I bought the Sony ZA 24mm f2. I've always been interested in the lens as I love 24mm, but the price kept me away. Using it on the LA-EA3 was pretty disappointing honestly, the lens has a lot of astigmatism outside of the center frame which seems to confuse the AF system. It's a good lens stopped down, but wide apertures it's not very good. The lens is going back to Adorama.

Mike, any way you'd post crops for a resolution test at 80, 135 and 200mm? I had one for years, and I know it's not as sharp as the 200/2.8, but I am on the fence...

I think you might be surprised how fast the AF is (though we'll see if the LAEA-5 is crippled at all). It's not quiet, and it's jerky, but there are multiple reports, and I saw a couple video reviews sometimes ago with the 80-200 2.8 HS outperforming the 70-200 SSM on an a99ii in terms of speed and hit rate.

Yup, that lens was always a beauty. I'm very interested to see your tests/results.
Mike's 80-200 is a beauty too, but in a 'much loved' kind of way haha. Interested to see those results as well!
