The bigger question for me is. Why do these camera companies even think "Vlogging" is a big market segment?

Maybe because it is? Do you have other data indicating the size of the vlogging market?

In any case, personally I don't care whether Sony markets this as vlogging camera or not. The main point was that a 3” 3:2 LCD screen as well as large EVF can’t fit within the heigh of A7c, unless they do something like making the camera wider and move the EVF to a side of the LCD and sensor. If you look at three "compact" cameras below, the EVF size on top of LCD is the main factor determining the total height of the camera:

This may be true...but I'd rather have them put a 2.8" screen and make it 2mm taller and put a 0.7x finder in than what they chose to do, but maybe that's just me. And frankly, from the looks of it, they could have kept the screen and simply increased the height 2mm to fit the a6600 finder in there - which would also allow for a few extra buttons or maybe a joystick, and would still be notably shorter than the A7III - it's barely an increase in height from what they have now.

Super interesting camera but the usual BS from $ony to squeeze all our money on the Mark II in a year or two.

Why would they go with an old low res EVF and cut shutter speed to 1/4000? Also the menus and fully touch navigation that the already released A7sIII got?

And if this is a vlog camera, why didn’t they fix the horrible rolling shutter?

Really want to buy this smaller camera as the biggest complaint I’ve had with the newer releases has been the ever increasing size and weight but tired of spending money on a half baked product. Before was the FW that never got updated until a new mode came out, now Sony goes cheap on the hardware that already exists and is present in other of their cameras.

Many don't realize how much money is being made in content creation for social media. These are professionals in the sense they actually make a living from it.

Nice work, Mike! But also note that your image makes clear that the total grip + body thickness that you get to wrap your hand around is the same.

And the biggest difference is internal, the a6600 have the SD in the same battery slot behind it, the grip of the a7c you are basically wrapping your hands around the FZ100

Hmm, reading this thread was educational in a sense . It seems that there is a need for the smallest possible FF camera with viewfinder and IBIS as there is for smallish FF camera retaining the ergonomics and capabilities of its bigger and older brothers.
I can't say I like the use of cheapest/oldest/smallest components for the ergonomics department, but I can't say it does not make the camera smaller...
The pricing though, paying premium it seems only for the form factor at the cost of ergonomics, rather old-ish tech in 2020 and some cut backs in photo department (1/4000 ss, lack of EFCS control) does not look good to me...

New lens line will be announced too: The compact lenses will have the code “V”

The last of the bullet points in the SAR post mentions a new lens line. Could those be compact primes from Sony?

From what I understand the one new lens coming out is a 28-60 f4.0-5.6. A kit lens for the new A7C.

vlogging market is huge and is growing. influencer marketing is a thing now. influencers are constantly trying to stand out by stepping the production value of their content up. just because many of you aren't in the target market and don't understand it doesn't mean it doesnt exist.

I have a couple of friends who are influencers.....they are in the local modelling and acting scene and influencer marketing is a natural progression for them. Anyway its been interesting to see them start to value things like lighting, stabilization, and IQ as a whole. Video with a lot of high ISO noise is amateur looking and they understand that. A lot of these people are photography clients and contacts...basically they hired me on because they have an eye for production quality.

if you are releasing a camera in 2020, then of course it makes sense to market to them.

That said, it doesn't mean that the a7c doesn't have useful applications elsewhere. Many of us want a compact FF and understand that it inevitably comes with compromises. That is what the a7c is.

Rolling shutter isn't an issue for most video where you have 1 person on screen talking. That's the vast majority of Vlogging work unless they're actually good at b-roll and even then so much b-roll is just people walking (sometimes on point, sometimes not).

rolling shutter is a real issue, but not generally for vlog use.

And maybe it is not. I am stunned some people think managements of big companies know what they are doing and always make the right decisions based on actual marketing data out there while it has been noted time after time that these people are just human beings like the rest of us and they make mistakes, sometimes very big mistakes.

That said, they may probably think vloggers are an influential segment of the market on which I agree with them somewhat. In any case, Sony has always wanted to expand its market using the online social media. It is just that their efforts have always been half baked and incomplete with plenty of mistakes. A7c may be one of them, maybe not. We will see. I chance of failure would have been minimal if they cared to cater to the needs of a larger portion of the population. If they had included an additional dial, had not omitted the customized buttons and had included their new touch interface into this camera, the camera might have been slightly larger and heavier (maybe not) but it would have been much more attractive to a larger segment of the consumer market. Even if this camera sells at Sony's level of expectations, I think at best, Sony went for a moderate success instead of a historically triumphant success. They have set their ambition level low.

Not exactly sure where SAR got the "V" designation, but this kit lens is listed as an FE lens.
FE 28–60 mm F4–5.6 and SEL2860

https://www.sony.com/electronics/camera-lenses/sel2860

In keeping with Sony's New Concept marketing description and like the A7c, the kit lens comes with similar "The world's smallest and lightest full-frame compatible zoom lens" ( with some foot notes clarification--"Among interchangeable zoom lenses for 35 mm full-frame-format camera bodies, as of September 2020. Sony survey.")

My guess is depending upon A7c sales, we might see at least one more of these mini zooms. Also from what I read most vloggers want/need something with AF wider than 28 anyway, so maybe a wider zoom might appear at some point.

"vlogging market is huge and is growing." This seems logical to me, and Sony in recent interview said the video market segment is important. But I have not seen any data to confirm. All I think I've seen as of today are numbers that show a sustained, rapidly declining/shrinking camera market overall for some years now.

BTW, I am very interested to hear the Vlogger community's view on the A7c and kit lens. Are there any forums where the Vlogger community posts opinions? Or mostly Instagram, Youtube etc.?

"Who are the Famous Vloggers?
There are a lot of quality YouTubers making some serious money vlogging. Here is the list of 5 vlog superstars who earn their paychecks by order of popularity:

-PewDiePie – One of the most successful YouTube stars, with over 54 million subscribers and $15 million profit in 2016.
-TheDiamondMinecart – Daniel Middleton is a Minecraft commentator and a reviewer of gameplays videos with 14.4 million subscribers, with the income of $213,000-$2.5 million.
-Roman Atwood – The prankster whose videos got him 10, 152, 692 subscribers and an income of $8 million.
-Lily Singh – A popular comedian with 10, 296, 350 followers and $7.5 million profit.
-Yuya – The young beauty tutorials superstar with 17.8 million subscribers and $41, 000 per month from YouTube revenue alone."

The Vlogger community is very much Youtube focused.

Note that the photography portion of this community is a small fraction of the overall vlogger community. It's mostly oriented elsewhere.

Fred Miranda doesn’t have a separate video forum, it was downvoted. Maybe then it isn’t too strange if there aren’t too many vloggers or influencers around here?

A lot of you here have been supporting the "vlogging" trend without realizing it.

Case in point...a7c is announced, and where do you immediately go to learn more? Sony website? Ads on TV? No...you watch videos from The Northrups, Mark Galer, Kai, etc etc etc. Then you repost them here for us to see. It wasn't an accident that they are releasing videos 2 minutes after the announcement lol.

Companies have realized that its cheaper and they get more penetration by giving influencers stuff for free (or give early access to stuff) than to purchase TV ad spots, or to pay for clicks on web ads. Influencers in turn get more views and clicks, and are able to better monetize their channels.

It's interesting to see when a bunch of the people on my IG start simultaneously posting about the same make-up line lol. You know what's up.

Whole different world. I guess it could be called the Casey Neistat world in the USA. Even I know who this guy is and how many millions he's made not least of which was selling his Beme video share app to CNN for 25 million

"On November 28, 2016, CNN announced that it would acquire the Beme company, reportedly for US$25 million"
