You may be right, but they knocked it out of the park with the recent 16-55/2.8.

That's interesting that you would even pay 1000 for a "crappy body"

'much crappier' doesn't mean that the body is crappy - just that it is worse than the A7III...I used to own the A6400, and the body is not 'crappy' in itself, but it is crappy compared to the A7III

Guy, Just wanted to send a shout-out to you and all the others currently being affected by the fires in the US. Us Ozie's had to endure similar conditions last summer, so our heart's go out to you...

Specs listed look disappointing. While the form factor looks nice it's too heavy. Not sure anyone understands compact should mean lightweight.

Drop IBIS
Use the W battery
Use the NEX6 chassis
Camera would be under 400g

Go polycarbonate like an A6100 save a bit more.

I really wanted to get this camera but it's too heavy and at $2000+ keeping my gen 1 A7R or my A6100 seems like a better fit as a compact travel camera.

Have a few questions about this body, most of which will probably have to wait for a review.

  1. Is there sealing? If so, to the same level as the s III/ rIV/ 9II? Or are we back to the 3rd gen 7/r level of mostly sealed with some obvious weak points?
  2. If the s III AF algorithm is true... does it have the same processing power/refresh cycle to achieve the s III's level of AF performance, or are we talking about basically what the 7 IV will be when it comes out?
  3. Relatedly, does this sensor have a better -EV rating when it comes to AF sensitivity than the 7 III? Or is it the same?
  4. Since Sony has removed the joystick (this one REALLY baffled me) is the touch screen implementation actually responsive enough to function in its place, or even with the apparent AF improvements that come with new algorithms are we taking a step backward from the 7 III due to a lack of control?
  5. Does this take z-type batteries?

As a concept, this seems fantastic and honestly everything I hoped for when switching to mirrorless. The 7 III sensor is very good, and while I'd maybe wish for something like 36mp—the current sensor was the low light champ over the s II until the s III came out IIRC. Very versatile, and while I might miss out on some larger prints I'd be completely fine with 24mp if that's what they kept it at from then on.

Depending on what the answers are I might be switching from my 7 iii when I get the cash or wait on the 2nd gen body. Though I'd really hope for a bit better optically, the 35 1.8 FE & the 75 1.8 would be such a good form factor compliment (along with the excellent 20 G) that it'd be hard to really care depending on how much else this camera gets right. Absolutely perfect every day machine.

Seems like a very niche product, and not likely to sell well in the USA. Perhaps it was designed more for the Asian markets?

As Fred mentioned, I enjoy the EVF (even a good reflex VF) to isolate my subject and take it out of the overall surroundings.

I agree with others, that a better effort would be an a74 (hopefully with 36MP sensor).

Between my iPhone and a7R4, I don't see a spot here for this sort of product.

Place my vote squarely in the "YAWN" column.

Wow I just read the news now! I probably buy Sony 7c , shrink down my Nikon Z series, and come back Sony. I liked the form factor of A6000 series. Great to have FF sensor in that small body! Nice job Sony! I was waiting Nikon make one like this 7c but look like they don't think it's a good idea :-)

Well, thank you. I'm in the greater L.A. area and we've had smoke problems but not as bad as some of the other areas, even with a couple of close fires. Bad enough to curtail outside activities but not the apocalyptic lighting for the most part. So no good "bad" photos here.

I actually love they made the grip shorter/smaller. Similar to original A7.

Sony's got people clamoring for a "good" small camera, a new A7 "iv," and a current feature set/performance entry level. Don't think any one camera will do that. I've got an NEX6 and A6400. I don't think you can squeeze an ff sensor and IBIS in there, add slots, bigger battery, and a range of added control wheels, dials and buttons, weather sealing, faster processing, higher resolution, make it lighter and get the price under $1000. Some folks are going to be disappointed what ever shows up.

That's the beauty of ergonomics...what's terrible for some is fabulous for others. I own a Fuji X100 and find the ergonomics to be terrible on that camera...others rave over it. I still use the X100...sometimes you just have to suck it up.

I'm a bit curious if anyone doing "sample photos" with the new camera or lenses might have been impacted by the weather conditions. Pretty much most of the west coast of the U.S. has got at least some smoke.

How much will it cost, what’s the AF like, have they worked on the skin tones, and when does it actually launch?

Guy,

Here in La Jolla, and I think all of the beach areas, the weather is perfect, and no real impact from the fires except extra colorful sunsets. Bring your camera, and your clubs. Perfect conditions for both.
