Looks like a fun little camera, but the main issue I see is losing 3 custom buttons.
On the current crop bodies, there are two on the top plate and one next to the menu button on the back, and none of those are there. Only the trashcan button remains as a "dedicated" custom button. That removes a lot of quick functionality to the camera.
I like the concept, but agree strongly with this comment. Currently, I'm using an A7riii and A6600 and with the custom buttons on the A6600 I can set it up so the operation is very similar to the A7riii. The elimination of the custom buttons indicates to me that this is a low spec'd product and at initial pricing is not a great value. Like many here, I will wait for the higher MP sensor in this body and hopefully that version will have the missing custom buttons and a high spec'd EVF.

Is it possible that it has the same sensor as the a9 and this is the "mini a9" that was rumored last year?
no:
The main specifications of Sony α7C are 24.2 million pixel back-illuminated CMOS, ISO100-51200 (extension: 50-204800), in-body camera shake correction that realizes a maximum of 5.0 steps of correction effect, and a maximum of about 10 frames / sec. It seems that the shooting performance, 3.0-inch touch panel type vari-angle liquid crystal, NP-FZ100 battery, size 124x71.1x59.7mm, weight 509g

True. In my opinion, however, one needs to take all the spare batteries into account for the former A7 series, as battery life wan't a strength there ;-).

no front dial, I could live with IF there were a button for hold and scroll, you can dual purpose the scroll wheel. Now it's a record button, which feels less intuitive. It could still workout, scroll wheel = aperture, hold + scroll shutter, hold + spin wheel = ISO. So the system COULD workout ok, but it does irk me a bit.

feel like they got into some internal conflicts while developing this, the idea/concept is most welcome in the FF mirrorless arena, but every single decision they made here seems to be trying to protect the APSC cameras
I was hoping this could be a step forward to APSC cameras too if they designed it well enough, but they took a step back compared to the a6600 in some instances

Have to say this going round and round on marketing , development and all that BS is a total turn off. Are we not photographers than some back door commentator. I think we need a forum for the total BS that reality is has no bearing at all on the product and one can prove smarter than the other guy. This happens every stinking time a camera comes to market. Folks get over it no one cares. It’s about what’s in front of you. Does it have what you need or want. Will it work and what it’s features are. Seriously if I want to know about marketing techniques there are better forums for that. No one can stay on topic anymore on what they are actually building for us. It’s why I’m barely here anymore some rocking chair quarterbacking is a total turn off. 9 times out of 10 they are wrong anyway or worse questing at everything. Can we not just wait for ACTUAL specs. There I said it. Stop the gossip...Show more →

Agree when you get down to brass tax not sure many of us can deal with very few custom buttons. That really becomes a issue , on my A7rIV there are 3 totally dedicated to a custom function and more like AEL that can be whatever you want. Coming from the A7r original body we come a long way as far as custom functions and abilities. Not sure this would work for me even as just a travel cam. Manual lens shooters use maybe 2 custom functions alone. Magnify for one and even peaking as another
I wonder and we don’t know yet what the FN can do as maybe there might be a quick function control or something weird.

I’m in Arizona and we have smoke here . Let’s not even get into the politics. Seriously our brains are on overload. All that’s going on is not good for us as individuals and as a country. I’m very disturbed with what’s going on.

The camera is not that light. For an extra 145g I'd rather have a viewfinder and an extra 18 mpx (aka A7rII) and just slap a 28/2 or 35/2.8 on the front.

I love the camera's size and looks and don't care about the lack of front dial or custom buttons. The main reason I'm not getting one is the 24MP sensor. Hopefully Sony will offer future models with 42 or 61MP sensors.

I agree. And this has IBIS, and even if the weight is similar, the form factor here looks more compact.

For my type of photography, the battery issue is not huge. Couple in my pack is all it takes. The big advantage of the A7R is that beautiful sensor.
Make sense--not a big deal for me either, more of a convenience. IBIS is really wonderful though in my book. Not for you?

I also want a higher MP version.
Yes, ibis is very important for me, and when I get into those conditions, I'll use my A7R3. I'm looking at a backup / 2nd camera for travel. Right now I take either my a6000 or A7R. Now this new camera gets thrown into the mix. Decisions...

It is (if you avoid the SS shutter speeds). I am happy with the 24 MP (and 61MP for the A7riv), but besides the A9 sensor 36 MP would be my personal sweet spot. I have huge prints made with the D810 in the past, I just prefer the A7riv AF over the A7r/A7rii/A7riii in dim light at weddings. If we weren't doing that the A7r3 would fully suffice.
