Nice pecker there!
Yes, I find my new 800/11 very capable too. It is sharp enough on a R5 and contrary to my fears. I purchased it because my dealer promised a very fare deal when the 100-500 arrives some time in the future.
But now, with a few RAWs viewed, Iīm not sure anymore that this is just a brief passage. I really like the reach with this level of IQ (as in image quality...). Turbulence is an ever present annoyance as I often shoot close to the sea surface. Any further minor enhancement of the optics would be as futile as it would drain my bank account. And it took some effort to finally find a shot through clear air. The 800/11 is a competent lens of 2020 where e.g. the EF 400 f/5.6 L is not, just as a comparison of image quality. Yes, most of the optical shortcomings can be dealt with. But that goes for the 800 too. It is a great lens!
These days the Sun only reaches an altitude of 10° at noon, but thatīs perfectly ok. I was not expecting to find the 800mm more limiting than the f/11. Iīm used to the 100-400LIS2+1,4xIII on my 5D4. The 800 has the reach of a dream, but lacks 100-799, well at least 100-500. So I guess that I will be in bad need of an other R5, and will always have the wrong one for the action at hand.
Canīt believe the weight of the R5+800/11. The 5D4+28/2 ZE felt like a brick of lead beside it. Incredible! The R5 with that long pipe can be handheld all day long where as the 5D4 with som reach attached will be felt within the hour. Luckily the 100-500 is only slightly heavier than the 800. But which one should be the number one lens?? Such a nice problem! If the 100-500 ever arrives.
