Optically they have similar spec but the lack of IS makes the 400mm a no-go without tripod (especially for closeup work).

So what? What has that got to do with making a comparison between the two? And the lack of IS did not stop it from becoming the most popular lens for all those shooting BIF's. Just like the long MFD was no problem either.

You want a telephoto lens with IS and macro capability, and you ain't gonna get it.

What's wrong with looking around for better options and asking what others have tried?

Yes, Canon doesn't have suitable lenses for me but I'm getting by with their gear for now and eying the RF lenses just in case they make an attractive R7. The 11/800 could be an interesting long-working-distance option if there is an acceptable way to use it for closeups (IQ closeup might be significantly better than the 100-400II at 400 mm with 2x TC). I don't like f/11 aperture but for closeups with stationary subjects it should be fine.

Just shoot close-ups with a macro lens, and distant subjects with a telephoto lens, just like everyone else. Canon is happier selling people both lenses, instead of one that does both.

A wet finch (handheld). Unprotected lens survived half an hour of this.

Edit. It's not a finch. It's another form of bird, apparently a sparrow. So there you have it, that's how much I know about non-owl birds.

I thought you said you weren't going to turn into a birder, and I thought the only flying objects you liked to photograph have solid rocket boosters attached

Well not that many things with SRBs these days, and that's why I have to have a friend let me know that actually it's not a finch but a fridggin' sparrow. A golden crowned one, at that.

Nice pecker there!

Yes, I find my new 800/11 very capable too. It is sharp enough on a R5 and contrary to my fears. I purchased it because my dealer promised a very fare deal when the 100-500 arrives some time in the future.

But now, with a few RAWs viewed, Iīm not sure anymore that this is just a brief passage. I really like the reach with this level of IQ (as in image quality...). Turbulence is an ever present annoyance as I often shoot close to the sea surface. Any further minor enhancement of the optics would be as futile as it would drain my bank account. And it took some effort to finally find a shot through clear air. The 800/11 is a competent lens of 2020 where e.g. the EF 400 f/5.6 L is not, just as a comparison of image quality. Yes, most of the optical shortcomings can be dealt with. But that goes for the 800 too. It is a great lens!

These days the Sun only reaches an altitude of 10° at noon, but thatīs perfectly ok. I was not expecting to find the 800mm more limiting than the f/11. Iīm used to the 100-400LIS2+1,4xIII on my 5D4. The 800 has the reach of a dream, but lacks 100-799, well at least 100-500. So I guess that I will be in bad need of an other R5, and will always have the wrong one for the action at hand.

Canīt believe the weight of the R5+800/11. The 5D4+28/2 ZE felt like a brick of lead beside it. Incredible! The R5 with that long pipe can be handheld all day long where as the 5D4 with som reach attached will be felt within the hour. Luckily the 100-500 is only slightly heavier than the 800. But which one should be the number one lens?? Such a nice problem! If the 100-500 ever arrives.

Good considering the mm. First one needs white balance corrected to remove blue cast.

F-stop is incorrect on both. First would be f22 and second would be f16.

The weather was wet and cold today but I managed to get some good pictures in the few breaks. All with the bare lens, I had the RF 1.4X but didn't really use it.

Bald eagle, sitting in a field

Swan vs. Swan (Hey I'm old enough to remember Mad Magazine)

Not sure if this is a juvenile swan, was a little away from the others

Hawk flying across some marshy land (no Denoise) iSO10000

Gratuitous butt shot, some nice legs on this bird!

The hawk found something but I was too far away to tell what it was

How many bald eagles can you count in this tree?

A few days ago outside of Hannibal I came across this nice Red Tail Hawk (I think). It was looking for a meal and gave me a little over a minute before it left. R5 and 800mm f11.

A close up of a duck, which I'm not sure what it is. R5 and the 800 f/11

For those looking, today 1/31/22, the Canon direct store has refurbished RF 800mm F/11 lenses for $709 (plus tax and shipping). Heck of a price! Fine print seems to imply the price is good until the end of February, or they are sold out. Same warranty as a new lens, but will come in a brown box.

Not for long. Today's price hack brings it back to $799 even after the $100 instant savings. I am glad that I grabbed one yesterday

Me too! still a good deal at $200 of retail for a basically new lens with a warranty. Just a little more expensive than yesterday.

Fuuuuuuudge. I was planning on picking up one of these this month after I get around to selling my Sigma 150-600mm....and now the price increase. Maybe I'll be able to sell it while there are still refurbished lenses in stock, but I doubt it.

Rotor blades are hard to freeze. At 1/500 I'm not sure MS would have helped you all the way. The tip speeds of those are surprisingly high.

It is worth an experiment though. MS at the same settings, and try and go 2-4 stops up on ISO and shutter speed in ES.

I wasn't actually after freezing them - that's scary looking, like the bird is about to fall down. What I wanted was them being less bent. Like in this shot (EFCS). And since this is an 800 thread I am also including a photo of UBBB, who happened to be the right size at the right distance.

I just picked one of these up the other day, and have been quite impressed for the price, and the compact size for an 800mm is great. Definitely light enough to handhold without issue.

a few early shots from mine:

And a shot of the lens in the 'wild', with hood (the JJC one for $16, rather than the overpriced Canon one, which costs $55)...the JJC hood is well made, substantial and locks with the locking button just like the Canon hoods.
