Great pics Dave, You're rockin' that RF 800 with the RF 1.4x.
Thanks Rod! That is what was mounted to my camera when I came across the Peregrine that day from an earlier shoot. Normally I use the 100-500 with the 1.4, most of the time.

When do you reach for the 800 rather than the 100-500+1.4x? Do you find the zoom with TC at 700 as sharp as the 800?

I can use the entire screen for focus points with the 100-500 and the 800 is a smaller box. If I am shooting a static bird, the 800 requires less crop. So I use that. I had been to an eagle nest shooting eaglets in the nest. If I think birds will be flying or other things will "pop" up, I mount the 100-500. I do think the 100-500 with 1.4 is about the same as the 800 bare IQ. It is a little faster on focus. Also, I can widen out with it and go to 420mm if needed. I have missed a few small bird shots as I was too close to focus before I had the 100-500. I like them both, and plan to keep them. I do not plan to get the RF2X, as I can get 1120 with the 800 and my RF1.4. I get worse atmosphere and heat waves at 1120, so I don't shoot at that length except certain conditions. I have also been very happy with both lens shooting 4k video in "crop mode". Did not plan to shoot video when I got the R5, but Eaglets are a lot of fun when small and video brings them to life. I have also got a couple videos of the peregrine, one I posted here a few weeks ago, that I was very pleased with "hand held". If I had to only have one, the 100-500 would be the one.

I find the 800/11 and 100-500 to be so different lenses that Iīm glad I donīt have to choose between them. In good light and when lots of pixels are needed on the subject the 800 is the obvious choice. But the 100-500 has such versatility when doing opportunistic strolls in the reality, shooting what ever gets in focus and pleases my eye or ego. It has such clarity to the images SOOC where the 800 need a little tweaking in post.
Slightly surprised I got the RF 2x today (was not my intention, but could not resist at that price point, when I ordered the RF 100L Macro) and the first images are surprisingly good. I have used better or worse extenders throughout my four decades in the sport and had expectations accordingly. Snapping a Mourning Cloak at minimum distance and being able to see the scales in the small blue dots along the back edge of the wings, from about 6m, that is actually not bad at all.
That it was immediately compared to the forceful sharpness of the images of my surprisingly horrible right big toenail, well, no, the 800/11+2x was not quite at that level.

Finally got my 800 out for a real workout. Got this gem - a mountain goat grazing by the water in Glacier Bay, Alaska. This was taken from the cruise ship. Landscapes with the 800mm are possible!

Pretty good results with this one, and I feel like I was pushing its limits. Was visiting friends and we were lucky some local eagles were home at the time. This was near twilight, handheld, ISO 20000 an 1/200th on the R6 with IBIS and IS fully rocking. Nice and sharp. Perfect timing too as 1) they were home, and 2) any later and it would have been too dark. I just wish I could have gotten closer. But I wasn't dressed to cross the tall grass and get any closer.

OK here's one I've never done before - this was taken with the 800mm F/11 on my R6, by recording 1 minute of 4k video, then using software to stack the individual frames. This method is common for planetary photography using telescopes, but I thought I'd try it with my 800 and see what happened. It is supposed to help overcome the atmospheric turbulence that may affect individual images of objects like this. It has significantly more detail than the single frame. Amazing really. Best photo of the moon I have taken.
