The one thing I have seen that bothers me about the overheating is when Tony Northrup mentioned that shooting stills will heat the camera up to a point that recording time can take a big hit when switching to video directly from shooting stills. I am surprised that just shooting stills would generate this much heat. I would be interested to know if this impacts recording time for all 4k modes. As time goes on and more people get their hands on the camera the truth will come out. With only three reviews on Canon's site I don't think much can be gleaned from them.

Gerald Undone also reported this. Said 1 hour of stills shooting that was very light (approx 30-40 shots) heated the camera to a point that it had zero recording availability.

If this shooting stills heats up the camera this much then this might be a bigger issue than I have initially thought.

The internet is a valuable tool that can be used to access limitless knowledge and it's being abused. For whatever reason, the Nikon vs. Canon rivalry was always about lenses, colors, ergonomics, and general preference. The Sony vs. Canon rivalry is a d!ick measuring contest of childish proportions. These users will actively troll Canon groups to start arguments. I've never ONCE cluttered a Nikon or Sony group or forum with my opinion...yet this seems to be very common with the Sony users. I wonder why that is, and I have my own speculation.

If Sony fanboys are trolling Canon's website they are doing a poor job. As of this morning there are only three reviews there. The truth will always come to the surface over time.

IMO, when someone is spending $3k-$4k on a product it had better be advertised accurately by the manufacturer. Canon has hopefully learned from their past as this wouldn't be the first time this type of problem has surfaced for them on a new launch. Personally, I would rather see them under promise and over deliver.

I'd say Canon has been about as up front as they possibly can be. If anything that worked against them; Sony usually keeps quiet about their flaws and just let's it surface after many people have bought it.
As for shipping delays, there's nothing they can do about a global pandemic.

If I have an issue it is them being upfront after the problem becomes a wide topic of discussion. I just read on CR (take this for what it is worth) that they are delaying the second release of cameras until November. If this is true then I think it indicates they have a problem on their hands and are trying to find a solution to minimize the heating issue.

And I don't mind waiting a few months if they can fix a few bugs and make a near-perfect camera an inch closer to perfect!

Be careful about the rumor about the delay and the speculation as to the reason. Under ordinary circumstances that might be warranted. But these are far from ordinary circumstances. All it takes is a COVID outbreak in one area that makes one component and you have a delay.
Also manufacturing is complex. For all we know Canon made a large amount for shipping now but demand has been that high. Maybe they front loaded the manufacturing and without that we'd have even less. Maybe they have to repurpose some of their manufacturing facilities to produce the R6 given the realities of the pandemic. Who knows? As Tim Cook noted, it's very hard for outsiders to divine what is going on by one manufacturing data point.

Actually I'm more curious of how it does in very cold weather instead of hot. I do a lot of shooting when I can't feel my fingers. My 5DsR has had zero issues at -23F.

Those comments on the Canon site are undoubtedly trolls and spammers, posted way too soon for any new customers to have had time to test.
I really do believe that either Sony has a social media strategy to down talk the competition or else a great number of their fans have developed that mentality.

I don't know why when people discuss these things they always only include a portion of the story.
Here are some more relevant facts about overheating:
1. Gerald Undone clarified that he could still shoot 4k30 in non-HQ mode.
2. Gerald Undone also clarified that his ability to shoot stills was not impacted.
3. Chelsea Northrup also said they could still shoot stills.
4. All of these testers were using 120hz refresh rate EVF, and the camera was more or less left on. For Gerald Undone, it was 40 photos shot throughout the course of an hour with the camera left in it's 1 minute to shutdown mode.
Other reviewers, have reported never being impacted by the thermal limitations on actual shoots in spite of being in hot and humid Florida, even though they regularly shoot 4k60 (Dan Watson).

I would be a bit upset if I was shooting stills for an hour, and then an event or action was taking place, so I switch to video and all my HQ modes (4K60, etc) were all disabled because video mode detected the camera was too hot. That effectively means that in everyday usage, you might relegate this camera down to just the low end 4K or lower modes all the time.

Canon will fix this, I am quite sure.
I don't know that Canon will fix it. Watching Dan Watson's coverage, and Armando Ferreira's coverage make me think that *potentially* Canon has actually already sorted out the issue to some small degree.
Dan Watson measured his R5's external temperature when it was overheating and found that they it was hot. Armando Ferreira commented in his most recent video that the camera was actually *cool to the touch*, including the battery, when he received overheating warnings.
So I don't really know, maybe they decided at the last minute to actually add more thermal pads connecting the internals to the body, but either way I think that it would be a mistake the purchase this camera thinking that Canon would fix these issues. It seems extremely unlikely.
