Cool. Thanks Bud
I was close in my thinking on it.
Looks like a buy for many.
This may help guys like me with studio work where the GM 85 1.4 failed under modeling lights and slowness of the AF with that lens. I had to give up the GM 85 1.4 because of this issue and had to move to the 85 1.8 sony or Batis as the AF was much faster and could actually focus under dim modeling lamps.
This new Sigma hopefully will give us back the 1.4 but with the speed needed for that type of work. I may have to get one after its out and I test it

I'll have to convince myself that I'm happy with the FE 85 f1.8, the sigma looks awefully good and they deserve to be rewarded by creating such a nice lens.

I'd like to pose the same question for not only their 35 and 50, but also their 28, 40, 105, and 135 as well.
I am seriously impressed with what Sigma is doing right now. Between the 35/1.2, 45/2.8, 100-400, and now the 85/1.4, they are hitting so many demographics with different kinds of lenses.

The Sony 85 and Batis 85 1.8 lenses are very nice but neither one of them render outstanding but thats the nature of a 1.8 lens. Not that there bad lenses by any stretch they are just not what we expect from the likes of a 1.4 lens. Certainly not the look of the GM 1.4 for sure which is outstanding just a slow boat to work with.
This Sigma could be that killer lens between them. Bottom line we need a faster speed 1.4 lens than the GM like the Batis 1.8 speed but the look of the GM 1.4. Could this be it

Maybe their plan is for a more compact Sigma 28/1.4 DG DN? I don't mind that either.
If they shrunk the pinnacle of their DSLR line I couldn't be more happy. 85 is already done, but then we'd have the 28, 40, and 105. I think 35 and 50 will stay 1.2 to compete with offerings from other makers as sort of a statement. After all, Sigma and Zeiss were the ones who really kicked modern lens design up a notch with the Otus and ART lines—and I'd give the lion's share of the credit to Sigma here. Not only with their lenses being more accessible and thus more likely to sway customers from OEM designers, but also due to the fact that their ART line is so far reaching and thorough across the spectrum.

It looks like the new Sigma will be more trouble for the Batis than the Sony 85/1.8's sales.
The latter still wins on price ($600 new), size (14mm shorter than new Sigma) and weight (250g lighter than Sigma) but it's a f/1.8 lens with lower IQ in comparison. (Although still quite good)

Yup, now we just need a small 50mm 1.4 and it will all be finally coming together. Cummon Sigma, we know you can do it now.
For me the 24 f/1.4GM, Sigma 45 f/2.8 Contemporary, and the Sigma 85 f/1.4 Art, make a really nice set of pretty small lenses with high IQ and relatively low price. Yeah, I do wish the 45 were a little faster, but at that size and price and with its lovely rendering it is a great value.

Price before rebates are $1199 in case of both the new Sigma 85/1.4 and the Batis 85/1.8 at BHphoto.

Yeah, a Sigma Art 28 f/1.4 given the same treatment would be a wonderful addition and would be a nice addition and L mount as well. I think we have some hope it will happen even though the current 28 f/1.4 Art is among their most recent offerings.
Right now I am thinking of a Sony GM 24 f/1.4, Sigma 45 f/2.8, and Sigma 85 f/1.4 kit, but I would make room for the right Sigma 28 f/1.4. Then I could go with Sony G 20 f/1.8, Sigma 28 f/1.4 DN Art, Sigma 45 f/2.8 DN, and Sigma 85 f/1.4 DN Art. Just so many nice lenses lately.

Stop Steve! I've been thinking about repurchasing the Sigma 45/2.8. Loved the rendering when AF works.

I know it's a stretch but oh man I would love for them to re-do their primes like the 40mm 1.4 next. Don't care too much about the 105 1.4 since its a special purpose lens I only carry for those times but man the sigma love has just jumped to another level for me I just got my Sony 100-400 GM that I am so loving but now I need to get another Sigma lens next!

Yeah, I have owned the Batis 85 since it was the only 85mm for the Sony system. So far I haven't felt compelled to downgrade to the Sony 85 for just the size advantage or upgrade to the GM for better bokeh. But this Sigma is pretty much the same size as the Batis and offers f1.4. I don't think this Sigma has bokeh in the same league as the GM (from samples so far), but it's a compelling package.

This looks to be designed with similar priorities to their 56/1.4 for APS-C. Very sharp, nice bokeh, pincushion distortion and a compact size. I'll trade distortion for high performance everywhere else given the size.
I love my Samyang 85/1.4, so I will almost certainly not be getting this, but it does look like a great option. Rendering looks lovely.

They just need to shrink the 35mm 1.4 first. Then we don't need the 28 and 45 for a nice 3 lens set up. I'm loving my 20,35,75 setup up but would easily bump the Sony 35 and probably the Samyang (with alittle more hesitation) for the Sigma 35 & 85 assuming the AF is fast and accurate.

I wouldn't mind a smaller mirrorless-first redesign of the 24-35mm f/2. I'm still using that lens with the MC-11.

I actually think this is going to be awesome, and I almost never shoot longer than 40mm. It's prioritizing small-ish size and lightweight. Looks well corrected but with rounded blades, so smooth bokeh. Available in L mount, too.
That said, WHAT THE H3CK? Where are those small, wide and mmoderate angle lenses y'all have been working on, Sigma?
