The size on this is really really nice, isn't it? For a 1.4 it's quite tiny.

SAR has published even more leaked specs. The new Sigma 85/1.4 is approximately the size of the Batis 85, but weighs 180 grams more. The MTF @1.4 is on the same level as the Batis @1.8, if manufacturer’s curves are to be believed. Price level is the same too, in my country (comparing to the existing DSLR lens). If all holds true, Sigma has done quite an achievement.

Watching the presentation. Lens appears even more compact held in hand than the images suggested. Says they’ve achieved the size while enhancing performance over previous model. Achieved via their glass with large diameter iris unit and in-camera aberration correction, but don’t rely on it too much because it can result in degraded IQ.

I'm stunned by just how small it is. With the original 85 I didn't see the benefit of using such a large lens. Yes, performance is excellent but it doesn't offer anything that the GM doesn't offer. The 105mm was the truly special one being even bigger and heavier, but having something magical...

... But it doesn't get used enough which is unfortunate. While I'm not sure if this lens will be as magical, the simple fact that they seemed to have put so much performance in such a small package is something magical of its own and I may look to trade the 105 in once some real world testing is out. This is an 85 1.4 that you could have with you any day of the week.

Yeah, this might finally be the 85mm that gets me to leave my FD85L behind. The size of the GM and the previous Art lens was too much, but I haven't wanted to settle for f/1.8. This is 1mm shorter and ~100g less than an version of the FD85L. Sold.

I'm kinda gobsmacked tbh. Also a bit grumpy they didn't take this design initiative (better + smaller) for their 35 instead of the absolute monster we got. Well, good job you bunch of lens nerds. I know what I'm picking up if I ever get a portrait lens for Sony.

Placed a preorder to hold my spot. Looking forward to someone posting the images online so we can look them over in detail - not quite the same seeing the stills in a YouTube video. But generally the bokeh looks good. Noticing the cats eye bokeh balls whereas the GM’s are rounder.

Any of the “reviews” that are up yet show anything about AF speed/performance? The one I watched was very brief.

EDIT: Fired up DA’s and he does a little testing.

Yeah, pre-production firmware so probably not the best place to get a read on AF performance. Abbott says however that he thinks it will be up to the 85mm FE version with firmware, though, so... good potential?

Honestly, don't know what Sony is going to do to recover sales on this FL. I have 0 doubt that if they release a GM II it'll have dual linear motors and a better AF performance, but uh... 85 isn't typically a sports FL. Good speed/great accuracy + amazing performance/size >> great speed/accuracy + amazing performance/size(?) at this FL.

Sigma is known for super sharp lenses so this may be the sharpest 85. Exactly what one is not looking for in a large aperture 85. I hope they move their 45/2.8 bus further ahead.

Looks very good. Just downloaded the A7riv samples from the homepage and even placed at the 1/3rd location the model eye sharpness looks great. Additionally, compared to the old 85Art the CAs seem to be well controlled.
Preordered.

Can't wait till sigma designs a 50mm 1.4 or 1.2. Be nice if it was the size of the Canon EF 50mm 1.2 L

People will buy it. There are those pros for whom the best is easily justifiable even if the difference seems marginal to someone like me. And there is the fact that to qualify for Sony Pro Support you’ve got to have at least 3 GM/Zeiss lenses. So if that’s important to you and you’re using the 85GM now, might not be worth going with a 3rd party lens.

But, yea. For the rest of us it could be a tough sell.

Samyang 85/1.4 is just 560 grams. This should be sharper (though Sammy is one of the all time sharp lenses tested at lenstip) but i hope it is as poetic as Samyang

They just have to be Sony-brand lenses, not GMs. But your point is still valid. Can't qualify if you've only got third-party lenses.

I returned the Samyang as it was garbage for video.

It says Sony Zeiss or G Series lenses. So I guess not specifically GMs, but the language suggests they have to be branded a certain way. Meaning the 85/1.8 would not count, but the 55/1.8 ZA would. Unless you know that not to be the case? I was just interpreting what’s written there, but admittedly have no experience with it.

Seeing the size, build and example images from this lens, the thought that leaps to mind is 'wedding photographer workhorse lens'.
