I think this lens coming out is mostly about filling a hole in the L mount set of lenses. Here are the FF prime lenses designed for the L mount

I am of course not counting the DSLR converted lenses, but if Sigma is going to start designing lenses for the L mount then having an 85 f/1.4 makes a lot of sense. Both Panny and Leica are building a bunch of slower lenses and other than those slower lenses they both have just a 50 f/1.4. So the faster lenses are wide open (except at 50mm where making a third fast 50 seems a little excessive at this point). I think it makes sense they started with the 35 f/1.2, but given that no one else is making an 85 f/1.4, I can see why moved to the 85 next. The system then has a great 35 f/1.2, two good options at 50 f/1.4, and likely at least a very good option at 85 f/1.4.
In time I expect them to remake all their fast DSLR Art lenses for the L and E mount, but give that they are in the L mount alliance I think we got to expect that holes in that lineup are going to drive what lenses they choose to remake first.

Don't know about the 135mm, which is not a lot much bigger and heavier than the GM version. I mean I don't really know what they can improve on this lens on a sony Alpha, whereas the 85mm even if it is really good, it is way much bigger and heavier than the GM version! So there was -and there finally is- an improvement possible.
I'm kinda lucky since I just sold mine 10 days ago because of its weight
But as many I am really excited about sigmas lenses.
I have had the 50mm the day it arrived on my canon 5D, and never been disapointed on a lens, despite their weight.
The last I tested is the 24 70, which because I am not a zoom photographer, I thought I would sell... but after a few weeks on the seaside with my son... I have to say, I really like this lens

I'm not really loving the aesthetics of the redesign but if it's sharp with great rendering and focusing and has all the functions I need then it's a non-issue for me.
looks like it has an AF/MF switch, focus hold button and a declickable aperture ring. I actually like the look of the design much better in these photos

strangely enough it looks like there's a third unlabeled switch on the other side of the lens away from the rest of the controls. anyone have any ideas what this would be for? focus limiter, maybe?

Currently my only telephoto lens is the FE 135/1.8 GM but I'm curious to see how this compact 85/1.4 performs. I'm not expecting it to be highly corrected for axial CA but if it has nice rendering and accurate AF, I would be definitely interested.
It looks to be even smaller than the Samyang 85/1.4.

It actually looks pretty neat! Since I am not too happy with samyang AF 85 1.4 accuracy/hit this definitely will be interesting to see unfold! Sigma is really digging deep into the L/EF mount system and we all are loving it

I'm hope Sigma included a couple SLD elements to this one.
The SLR version 85mm F1.4 DG HSM Art is outstanding in regards to resolution and rendering but it's huge and heavy. Hopefully Sigma found a way to design a smaller lens with similar performance.
