I can’t agree with that assessment personally, at least for action in the form of BIF. The R4 has been considerably better at tracking in my experience. I’ve never been all that impressed by EyeAF with either body if the subject is moving at all. The Sony sweet spot will definitely be an A9 performing body at 40ish MP.

When the a7riv was developed they could have either gone the way of the R5 and stuck with 42mp, but optimized the AF and burst rates. That said, I don't disagree with prioritizing resolution in the "R" model. Its fine for posed portraiture, landscapes, and even documentary photography ...just not optimized for action. The output from the a7riv really is something it be appreciated now that I use the a7c pretty regularly these days.
A7c AF OTOH is probably had the best AF aside from the a9. Now that the a7c fills the entry level position, I think a $3k+ a7iv with a resolution jump and AF enhancements makes a lot of sense. ...Show more →
Regarding AF: Not my experience, having used it this year at weddings, when comparing it to the A7r3 e had before. You need a bit higher SS, of course, not adjusting for that can run you into problems.

Yes my experience is with eye-AF....portrait and wedding use. When using live-tracking AF, a7rIV has a greater tendency to jump off target when the subject is moving, and as such, misses at times. I turn live-tracking AF off on the a7riv, and just use plain ole eye-AF, or a selectable AF point.
With a7c, real-time tracking does a much better job sticking to the eye and is not as erratic. Closest I've seen to the a9 in an a7 body.

Real time tracking isn’t worth using on the R4, this is true. However, letting AF-C do its thing with either a flex spot or in wide with enough contrast is FAR better than the R3 used in the same way.

My AF experience with A7Riv is that it focuses slightly worse than A7iii (non-R) on moving subjects (based on my measurements) and it also focuses worse in low light on low contrast subjects than A7iii (subjective feeling, no measurements).

1) This isn't the whole market just Japan
2) Even in Japan Sony's lead is a mere 4% and much of the DSLR market will move to mirrorless over time. Canon has over 50% of that market, Sony has less than 1% of that market. Do you think Canon or Sony has a better shot at those current Canon customers?
3)Canon still does not have a full set of mirrorless cameras. They are still early on in their development of mirrorless.
4)Canon is still early on in their development of lenses for mirrorless cameras.
In my view it is way way too early to say the market has decided.

It's actually surprising give how well R5 sells in Japan...

The numbers mostly reflect sales of smaller sensor cameras--that's why Olympus is number 3. Even if the R5 is selling well it won't affect these number much and that is why they are also potentially misleading.

Yeah, the a6xxx series is by far the best selling for Sony...in that market it's the very well appointed a6xxx series for Sony and the relatively 'meh' EOS M series for Canon.

I'm more shocked at how much market share Canon lost, sony only picked up 2 points, while canon lost nearly 7 points.....
it's not like Sony did anything revolutionary with their cameras last year, most still have the old clunky UI, but the botched m50ii may have hurt canon. More than anything, Sony needs to ditch the clunky UI like 5 years ago.
I'm wondering who has picked up the market share, fuji, nikon, or panasonic?

Exactly. So if the EOS Kiss outsold Sony's 6400, from which camera segment did Canon's loss of market share vs. Sony come from?

My prediction for your 2021 purchase pattern is Sony 1 and Canon 0. There's an A9iii in the pipeline and most likely no interesting Canon
That is a good prediction. If A9(X) rumors are close to correct then it will be a no brainer. Only Canon that could be interesting is the R1 but who knows what that will really end up being. Also it may be way too expensive.

As I look into it, the BCN data was more on the number of units sold. What is missing is a correlation on the $ amount as margin differs from each market segment. I guess we will have an idea going into their financial reports. As my photographic needs is more on BIF/birding, I am just looking into Sony and Canon. Other photographic interests are on flowers and insect macros which could be served by current/old APS-C gears and even P&S ones.
I am formally retired as of this month and now able to tap into my retirement account (w/ spouse's permission of course) but still with budget limitation. I am ready for an overdue upgrade either with the upcoming A9X series (hopefully soon), 3+ years old A9 or the R5 with the 100-500mm (closely monitoring BIF performance/published reports/experiences).

One obvious possibility is that the three Sony kits in the top ten sell more than the 2 EOS M kits in the top ten, and it seem likely that the A6100 silver kit sells pretty well too and is just outside the top ten.
