Since we are on about these zooms. I good story today

So several moths ago I sold my Sony 12-24 on eBay. No one here wanted to buy it. It’s again a perfect copy. So sold it on eBay shipped to the buyer via USPS priority mail but stupid me I forgot to insure the dang thing. Well it got lost could not locate it anywhere. I’m still not sure what happened but I paid the guy Back and all that so I lost a expensive lens at least end of day that’s the bottom line.

Well the end of day turned into a surprise. Went to got get my mail today and it was returned to sender for more postage. Now I moved during this time so apparently it took months to get to my new address or something. I was shocked , surprised and relieved I got the lens back. It’s NOT a cheap lens and a big loss. So all this comes about with the 2.8 and I have the F4 again

Still noodling to just keep the thing. Seriously it maybe my lucky charm.

Among all the crap going on this is some good news. Made my freaking day

Assuming the buyer used paypal, didn't paypal's seller protection cover the loss? I always have assumed it would when I post a lens, but maybe that's not the case

This is actually a good story. My initial thought was the buyer was doing the eBay scam!

We or he did not even go there. I just assumed to pay him back. It’s honestly the first time something like that ever happened to me and I went right to the Post Office directly and used the Kiosk. Never use that facility again. Serious jerks and would not lift a finger

Anyway sorry to go off track but again think this all through. Most folks don’t need a 2.8 this wide except maybe Astro work. New the F4 is 1700. That’s 1300 you could put towards a dedicated Astro lens if you do a lot of it. Something to consider

I generally agree with you but differ here.

Many might want a lens that produces sunstars, is practically free of ghosting with the IQ and focal range of this lens.

A lenses value is not all about speed.

I absolutely love my 24 GM, 50 1.4 ZA, 90 macro, 100 GM, CV 110, 135 GM 100-400 and 400 & 600 GM and many others for their IQ and rendering and I seldom shoot them wide open.

What I see here is that the Sony god was so kind as to offer you a second chance to keep the 12-24 instead of the Sigma. Maybe you should take the offer?

That's a good advice as not everyone needs 12mm @f/2.8.

When we add a 12/2.8 prime to complement our 14-24/2.8 or 12-24/4 zooms, the total weight and price increases as well. Maybe not as much as 3k but that's the price of convenience and high IQ.

I think the problem is that there isn't a dedicated 12mm f/2.8 lens available that performs as good as this GM (based on initial reviews and my own expectations). Perhaps Sigma or even Sony will make such prime one day.

Agree sometimes a zoom can just do it all and more convenient too. I mean I have the Sigma 24-70 just for that reason. It’s a work lens not so much anything else.

Just thinking maybe keep my CV 21 1.4 and this and maybe sell my CV 15
Something to chew on.

One thing I always liked about photography outside the act of working itself was and is the mental debates. You know there is no winner but fun anyway.

I just listed my CV 21 1.4 with the thought process that I seldom use it and do not do astro.

I am not a huge MF buff although I own and like very much the Voigt 35 SE, 50 2 APO and CV110 I also already own a 16-35GM & 24 GM so with the 12-24 GM as nice as the CV 21 is I don't think I am going to use it.

What I would really like is a super good prime that accept filters in the 14mm ish range.

My CV 15. I chopped the petals off and it’s now a 62mm. Choppy 3

If we are drawing up a wish list, high IQ (on 61mp), 12mm, F whatever, straight aperture blades please.
I probably would have been tempted by the new Sony zoom if it had straight blades (assuming low flare).

I was all set to do that had it ready to be sent in and tested it and mine had a smeared left corner I have had two and love the color but both suffered from a softness in one part of the frame or the other.

I am a big fan of Voightlander I own four presently and they are as good as they get but their 10, 12 & 15 are not in the same league and older designs.

I find it hard to believe with the void we have for a truly high end UWA they have not addressed this yet.

They have filled their line out pretty well so unless they go long they almost certainly will be coming out with new UWA lenses I hope.

Maybe the high-end UWA zooms we have now have stolen a large portion of the potential market at the UWA end.

Anyone got the T stop info on the 12-24GM yet?

I'm going to assume T3

That is a good point but I do feel that someone perhaps Sony will come out with a excellent prime.

It is tough because you almost need to come out with two or even three like Voigtlander has 12 is a specific need as is 14 or 15. 10 is a whole other ball game.

Maybe an 11 and split the difference between 10 & 12 and have a 14/15 who knows.

But not everyone wants a fairly large and expensive zoom like myself. But even though I am happy to have a 12-24 GM coming

I would buy a 12 or 14 prime if it is very good on par or better than the GM.

I would say yes to a 14/15/16 1.2/1.4 for ~1800!

I'm very impressed with the Sigma 14mm f1.8. It is quite sharp, and after a firmware update, the focusing is just as snappy as my 24-70GM.

It was the first ultrawide that I tried that challenged the old adage that ultra-wides can't match more typical wide angle lenses for IQ (especially in the corners) and it totally changed my opinion about Sigma lenses. But the newer Sigma zoom, despite being substantially smaller and lighter, is even better (at 14mm) both for corner sharpness and also coma, which is not very good with the 1.8/14 wide open.
