If it comes close to the Sony 100-400 then it is a winner given the Sony is 2.5x the price of the Sigma.

I think that depends on your planned use for the lens. The MFD, which is already longer than Canon and Sony's at the wide end, grows significantly at the long end. If SAR's right about Sigma only producing the tele-extenders for L mount, then that's another ding against it. Even if the Sony 1.4x fits, it's unlikely it will allow the Sigma to interoperate fully. You'll likely have to tape over the contacts, so you'll lose AF and the ability to change the aperture.

From a landscaper perspective, you may be right. This may be a well-spec'd lens at a good price, but if you want landscape capabilities plus more flexibility, I think adapting the Canon (which can be a real cash saver, since you can pick up a used 100-400L II and the 1.4x III for about the same price as a used GM alone), or emptying your wallet for the GM makes more sense.

Use with FE TCs will be important to me. If it is then I'd consider selling my Sony 1-4 and picking this up just to save some $$. All I use my Sony 1-4 for is semi-macro (bees, butterflies, frogs etc) so I don't need to be holding on to such an expensive Sony lens for my limited use case.

A Sigma being smaller and lighter is a bit of an enigma. I thought bigger and heavy was their brand promise

I wonder if the two new teleconverters will work on the Tamron 2,8/70-180mm

Remember that the lens will be focus by wire, so it needs power to focus, i.e. no taping of the electrical contacts.

If there are no TCs for E mount right now, there could be a development announcement of that instead.

This will not be an Art series lens, thus lower weight and smaller size.

The leaked images says Contemporary, a C on a silver dot.

Good point. I forgot all about the FBW.

Yeah, the TC issue may work itself out, or it may just be temporary, state of the market thinking on Sigma's part. For me, the MFD is the bigger bummer.

Comparing Sigma to Sony is unfair as I don't see anybody cross shopping a $1k lens vs a $2500 lens. The price alone makes Sigma a winner in my book. I have used the Canon version of Sigma and was pleased with the results. So I have high hopes for native version.

I have not been following this one. Is the new Sigma FE the same design as their SLR version?

No, new design including one more lens element and now an FLD element and a linear motor.

The Canon version looks very close to the Sony 100-400mm based on the the-digital-picture comparisons: https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx - the corners are somewhat weaker.

If the new version has native AF performance and some improvements on corner sharpness from the FLD element added, will be a strong offering for the price. Excited to see what the reviews say.

Nothing unfair about comparing one 100-400mm zoom against another. It's only unfair if you expect the $1K lens to be as good or better optically, build, AF speed, size/weight as the $2.5K lens. It's also unfair if you expect the $2.5K lens that's faster, native, likely better optically, etc. to be $1K

I mainly use the 100-400 GM for landscapes but at 1395g (without caps and tripod mount), it's a bit on the heavy side for this application.
According to the rumored specs, the Sigma will be at 1,135g so a 260g savings...

The weight savings is noticeable but pricing aside, the crucial question to me will be how close they perform in terms of IQ across the field. The GM rivals my best primes at 110mm, 135mm all the way to 400mm.

No; it’s designed for mirrorless with a linear voice coil type motor, and one of Sigmas glass that behaves like fluorite elements, as well the LD elements. The design has one more element.

It’s not impossible that it’ll perform close to the GM for masses less money and less weight in exchange for a half stop less speed. Or not. But even if it’s not as good, I’m tempted as a relatively painless way to see if I enjoy stalking the birds in my garden and the Roos in the national Park. I wouldn’t want to drop real money on birding gear until I was sure I had the patience....

Definitely wins on price and knowing Sigma's latest offerings, it could be a stunner.

The Sony 1.4x teleconverter is weird. It seems Sony added some code where it only recognizes the supported lenses. We will know more when the Sigma is available.

Some press release photos leaked early https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12R0SD6sngwVRJpdPWs34ivYsBKE6jjx4

It seems more like a Sigma FP design that goes with that design language?

Interesting take aways were that the converter is definitely only L mount. The tripod collar might also be an accessory instead of a standard feature? All speculation of course but it would go with Sigma's vision of modular design for the FP.

Nice that the tripod collar already has an A/S dovetail.

The tripod collar is an add on accessory. Not included with the lens.

Foot is way too short to be of any use for me using it as a carry handle and to rest on my palm as I handhold. My Sony 100-400RRS foot is twice that length and perfect.
