I just received my copy yesterday but have not really spent much time with it. But I do agree that if you are going to shoot this lens on a tripod you do need a collar. And I really like the Sigma collar.
I compared the weight with collar of my Sony 70-200 F4 which was just under 1000 grams (also UV filter) to the Sigma with collar (no UV) at 1250 grams.
I think you get a lot more focal range for 275is grams.

IMO, it's still heavy enough to warrant a tripod collar for tripod use, especially when it's fully extended.

Nice find! I have a question though, since Sigma 100-400 DG DN is not that heavy, is there any obvious benefit to using a tripod collar?
Yes -- you can manage without the collar in non windy conditions (as I have) but framing is harder with ball head sag (on mine at least) when you have the lens fully extended. It does look like it will affect that portability of the lens though, so I'll probably leave the collar behind if I think I'll be mostly hand holding.

I had a chance to spend a bit more time with this lens and do a casual comparison to my 24-105. This was far from a rigorous comparison in that I only shot both lenses at approximately 105mm and at F11....I am a landscape guy I really don't have that much interest at how it performs wider open (for the most part). And for the most part I was looking at big issues with my copy that might necessitate returning it.
So in my casual comparison, I found the two lenses pretty equal which is a good thing, when you are comparing it to the 24-=105. I found the Sigma to be a bit more contrasty, which isn't surprising based upon the comments of some about the 24-105 being pretty flat. Contrasty can be interpretied as being sharper and I wouldn't say that that the Sigma was sharper, but I would say that the Sigma was just as sharp and certainly plenty sharp for my needs.
I didn't have the opportunity to compare it to my newly departed 70-200F4 but I would say that I found the 70-200F4 to be just off of the 24-105. Thus I think the new Sigma will be very good and more than enough sharpness for almost everyone.

I'd like a tripod collar when considering balance issues. One is with stability and tipping. I'd rather have the load much more balanced over the head as opposed to almost all of the weight to to the lens side (even with the usual precautions like hanging weight, etc.).
Also, I've found even lighter lenses, like the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR at 26.3 oz. (745g) on a D7200 could be troublesome on a tripod and/or head that wasn't really up to the unbalanced weight, "advertised" capacity notwithstanding.
I'm considering it for use on an A6400 and even if assured the mount was strong enough, I'd be much happier with the body hanging off the lens than vice versa when on the tripod.

Thanks for the responses, I only use the Sigma handheld but tried it briefly on a tripod to check IS effect but didn't notice any issues with balance (that was a very short test though). I'll try again sometime to see if it bothers me in any way...

Stunning shot, if you don't mind me asking - how close are those colors to what you saw?
All the best,

Thanks, the color is pretty close to what I saw, but I edited the photo to bring out more contrast and saturation that was otherwise dulled by the haze of the smoke. So, if I'm being honest, there is some embellishment being done here, but nothing too drastic that the RAW couldn't handle .

I continue to be VERY impressed with this lens for most uses and in comparison to the Sony 100-400. I’m not a birder so I can’t speak to those needs, but for most other needs it comes very close to the Sony 100-400.

Forgive me if this is discussed somewhere else (feel free to direct me), but has anyone done head-to-head comparisons with a *good* copy of the Sony 70-300G? I had a good copy that was quite sharp before I sold it for the Tammy 70-180, but now am wondering how this would compare if I wanted to get back to some additional reach for sharpness/contrast/color...
Thanks!
