For those of you who have this lens and do not want to spend $130 for the Sigma tripod collar, consider this. I am impressed. Works great for half the price.

As of today (September 16), the lens itself is 10% off at B&H with code BHCC09 for the next 2 days (not sure if this means ending 9/18 or 9/19). Hope this helps someone save a little $$.

I'm happy with performance right into the sun, some minor ghosting but good for a telephoto lens I think. Contrast held up very well. AF was also great.
I don't have a comparison to the GM unfortunately but it seems a good notch above the Sigma 100-400C and Sigma 150-600 in Canon EF mount.

Beautiful image Lora. Thanks for your feedback. I may try one.

I am very pleased with the Sigma Fred but, like Lora and I suspect most others who have bought the lens, I haven’t previously owned the GM so can’t make a proper comparison. The auto focus and stabilisation work better than I was expecting and I like the results.
Jannik Peters reported some issues (see pages around 9) if OS was left on whilst using a tripod but in these circumstances I always switch stabilization off anyway, irrespective of the lens. Likewise if the camera is left on, the stabilization carries on working and generating heat, and drains the battery. Sure enough this happened to me a couple of times and then also, to my surprise, with a Voigtlander manual lens. My brain is now programmed to make sure the camera is turned off and the camera is set to shut down after a certain period.

Fred,
I have borrowed the GM but don't own it. In comparing image quality I would be hard pressed to see the difference. Not sure about the power draining concept as my muscle memory always switches off a camera if I am not using it. All those years with small batteries -Jim
