How sure are you the two images represent the same scenario. It seems the image with the g20 has more of the sun exposed from the tree which would have an affect on the flare. Really does not take much difference in the sun positioning to have a dramatic affect on flare.
Hard to test apples to apples unless you are in a studio where nothing moves.
Identical.
Not a cloud in the sky, shot about 45 seconds apart, used a tripod, didn’t even remove the camera from the tripod, just swapped lenses. The Tamron was set exactly to 20mm. Exposure and LR settings the same.
I did several others sets at identical apertures and different angles, they were even-ish or the G20 was worse depending on but never better regarding flare.
Long time ago now, but I did get a chance to check on the ghosting of the g20 versus Tamron 17-28 which you and I differed on how close they were earlier in this thread. Here is a tripod test, both at f8, ISO100, 2 second delay on an a7r3. Medium contrast tone curve in LR Classic with -81 highlights and identical WB. No lens corrections or anything turned on. The G20 is appreciably worse. I did a couple other test, and the Tamron was ahead.
The g20 has more prominent ghosting and more ghost/blobs generally, and if you look at the focus point (the tree in the middle of the frame), you'll notice the g20 has a bit less contrast due to veiling flare. You'll also notice the g20 has a large bubble like flare coming from the sunstar, from about 3 till 7 o'clock. That just expands as you stopped down.
I didn't bring them out to do astro comparative test, but I do know the g20 gets odd reflections/ghosts with a bright moon I've never gotten with the Tamron 17-28 or GM 24.
Edit: and for the record, I switched to the Sony G 20 because of the extra speed for astro and the smaller size....Show more →
Sorry for the delay. Just saw your post.
Yes, there is definitely ghosting in many of your sunstar samples. I didn't do my usual sunstar testing with this lens but my impression was that flare resistance was good. Post more samples when you can.
Best,
Fred

Just an observation from my preliminary testing of the 20/1.8G against my 16-35 GM.
The zoom at f2.8 has less field curvature at f2.8 than the 20G at f2.8, corners are a bit better at that focal length otherwise shows comparable sharpness at all apertures. For differences in the center I need to zoom to 200% (then the 20mm/1.8G is maybe a tiny bit sharper in the center, a bit weaker in the corners stopped down). The 16-35 shows much better flare control, though.
The 20mm corresponds to 19mm of the zoom.
N.B.
At 16mm infinity tests the zoom is sharp across the range from f5.6 on. At f2.8 the corners are clearly weaker than the center, but not bad.
Overall, I seem to have gotten a great copy of the 16-35 GM going along with the Kase 100mm filter set.

It just seems like the sun is just slightly more exposed away from the tree in one of the images which would have a definite effect on flare. Have no idea how much 45 seconds would impact the position of the sun. Just my observation.

Yeah, my guess is that it’s possibly due to FL difference/framing—the Sony 20 is a bit wide I think for a 20mm. Or maybe the 20mm mark on the Tamron is not precise. That’s my best guess. Not really sure though.

No problem @FredMiranda@ and here's another at f8, all exact same settings
@chez@ this one doesn't have any partial obstruction or anything. I don't think the Sony is bad by any means, I just found the Tamron better.
I prefer the Sony based on these 2 samples. Even if I ignore the Tamron's faint but humongous green blob in the bottom right area, I just prefer the the shape & the color of the Sony ghosts. (then again it's almost too close to matter)

It's not as flare resistant (ghosting) compared to lenses like the Loxia 25/2.4. The FE 20/1.8 G is more in par with the FE 24/1.4 GM in terms of ghosting resistance,
Here is the 24.1.4 @f/8 showing similar ghosting pattern:

Same here actually. In the second set the Tamron image gets more washed out by the flare than the Sony image. In any case, I'm not a sunstar shooter and most of the time don't have the sun in my image. I'm looking into adding the Sony to my travel kit for documentary photos.

Hello everyone,
how are your opinions after some time with this lens?
Would you recommend it over Voigtlander 21/3.5 (just image quality, not ergonomics).
I am looking for landscape lens to complement Sigma 24-70 on my a7r2 and I think about S20 or CV21/3.5 (1.4 is too expensive). I almost decided for Sony, but every time I see its sunstar I hesitate a lot.
p.12 #12 · Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Versus Other Lenses
For IQ alone I'd lean towards the Sony 20mm over the cv21 3.5. It will hold up better to higher resolution sensors.
The areas where I think the CV could be subjectively considered better would be:
- Sunstars
- Voigtlander look (colors, etc)
- FOV I think the CV is a true 21 where the Sony is like 19.5 or something.
- Size
- MF experience
I've had the CV 21 3.5 and 1.4, but chose the Sony. I really like the CV 21 1.4 and it's probably my fav for subjective IQ, but the Sony gives me almost the same look in an all around package that works better for me (AF, weather sealing, weight, etc.).
The Sony being a bit wider could also work well for your kit as you've already got something at 24mm.

I have the 20G and the 21/3.5CV and find them equally sharp across the frame at f/5.6.
I do however like the CV sun stars way way better than the G as others have noted.
I like the IQ of the G at f/1.8 way better than the /3.5 CV when I need f/1.8
My best ~20mm lens is my 21/2.8 Lox, but that doesn't get used much lately due to weight and size.

Have the 20/1.8 and just bought the CV 21/3.5 from the B&S board primary for MF and sunstars and color rendering. I rarely use AF with the 20 G when shooting landscape and I prefer the ergonomics of the CV .... focusing and the aperture ring.
For now, I am holding onto the 20 in case I have a dark sky use.
p.12 #18 · Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Versus Other Lenses
I ended up swapping my CV 21/3.5 for a 20G last year. It was somewhat bittersweet, I think the CV has a lot of positive qualities and was one of my favorite lenses. But the siren song of that f/1.8 aperture for the occasions where I need it, on a lens that is pretty stellar in most other respects to boot, won me over. I like the sunstars on the CV, but to be honest they can be over the top quite often and I wished there was a bit more control over the effect.

I grabbed the 20 1.8 as my first full frame lens. Price was too good to pass up. Now I just wish there were other focal lengths with gm quality for a similar price lol
