Just an observation from my preliminary testing of the 20/1.8G against my 16-35 GM.
The zoom at f2.8 has less field curvature at f2.8 than the 20G at f2.8, corners are a but better at that focal length otherwise shows comparable sharpness at all apertures. For differences in the center I need to zoom to 200% (then the 20mm/1.8G is maybe a tiny bit sharper in the center, a bit weaker in the corners stopped down). The 16-35 shows much better flare control, though.
The 20mm corresponds to 19mm of the zoom.
N.B.
At 16mm infinity tests the zoom is sharp across the range from f5.6 on. At f2.8 the corners are clearly weaker than the center, but not bad.
Overall, I seem to have gotten a great copy of the 16-35 GM going along with the Kase 100mm filter set.
