B&H told me my order should be in the warehouse the 14th and then they would ship, Hopefully Sat or Monday I should have it. Really want to have another go in better light for some flight work. I was a little disappointed for the weather I had, the weather is still crap btw.

Exciting that they let you know they will be getting a shipment in this week! Hopefully it's large enough for all the preorders that have been placed. I am patiently waiting to get my email confirmation on it being shipped but have no idea how many people are in front of me in the line!

Well the D6 (err D5.1 as it is being termed in the Nikon forum) looks like an utter dud. This round may go to Canon if you are keeping score. And as rumoured the sensor stayed at 20.8MP. Seems the sports/PJ photogs have won this round again

However, the only real uncertainty is how the two AF systems actually compare in real use. Nikon has made some improvements (claimed) and Canon seems to have made even more improvements (claimed) and innovated more with the new (non-line based) AF sensor. Of course if you like video and want to shoot 20FPS in LV vs 10.5FPS then the 1DXIII is miles ahead.

It has been many years since a Canon release has impressed me more than the competing Nikon release but surely this has happened.

I will now shut up about the D6 and wait on the barrage of 1DXIII images this weekend.

I usually do not talk about other brands but do follow them. If you look at the specs of the 1dx Mark III and thought 1dx Mark III is not worth the upgrade then I am not sure who will jump from the D5 to the D6. All three seemed to focus on image transfer speeds with no MP increase. On specs alone it does seem Canon put more into their release. Like you said we need proof of the new AF systems. My brief testing found improved AF but how much over the 1dx II I am not sure yet. I am looking forward to other post and their findings. I do not keep score but Canon won

This would seem to be the big question that is overlooked by the initial internet outrage about the D6 specs. I'm not familiar with Nikon's AF performance, but based on your comments and those of other reputable photographers here who have used multiple systems, it would seem Canon had more catching up to do, which may have happened with the1DXIII. But that won't be known until someone does side by side comparisons.

Maybe the D6's (non-live view) AF will still hold some advantage that isn't easily conveyed on paper. But the 1DXIII seems like a real powerhouse in video and live view, such as 20fps with AF vs. the D6's pitiful 10.5fps. To me it's by far a much more appealing 'hybrid' camera. A colleague demoed the 1DXIII and commented on the ability to shoot insanely long 20fps live view sequences of a subject at walking speed with ~99% AF hit rates.

I don't know, maybe the D6 is a holdover model until their mirrorless version lands? The 1DXIII's live view and video capabilities imply to me that Canon has made considerable strides that should result in promising mirrorless cameras in the near future.

I'm still on the fence about the 1DXIII. Not because I don't think it's a great camera with ample improvements over the 1DXII, rather, I think a purely mirrorless camera with reasonably similar capability will better suit my current needs. Meanwhile I can get by with the 1DXII for a while longer when shooting sports. Had the 1DXIII had a hybrid OVF/EVF viewfinder, I probably would have pre-ordered...

Not only this but the low FPS suggests that the read speed of the D6 sensor is probably very, very slow. So there will be many more lighting situations when it's useless.

There may be a surprise improvement in low/high ISO that makes the D6 look like a much bigger upgrade than it is.

Yes, it sounds most likely that it is the same sensor anyways. Poor low-ISO DR and slow readout. Otherwise I'm sure Nikon would have done similar to their recent D780 and what Canon did with the 1DXIII and put a lot of great mirrorless features into the camera.

It looks like my camera has been delayed. My shop told me Canon was supposed to send the cameras to them via 2 day shipping but they were sent ground. So instead of sending it to me today, they probably won’t get them til Friday. I’d hoped to shoot an event Saturday. Drat!

Back to the D6 question: DPR has an interview with a Nikon executive who specifically stated that of the two major improvements found in the D6, one was AF performance. The other was connectivity for getting images off the camera more quickly. He also confirmed the D6 refresh was intentionally conservative based on core user feedback. I guess time will tell how much of that is marketing speak and how the AF will compare to the 1DXIII improvements.

The memory size has made all my disks redundant :-)
Publication of photos from a new camera is the usual norm, but does not provide any real value in terms of the camera performance evaluation, except some entertainment for the readers.
I'll post some when time permits. I'm sure other new owners will fill the gap.

Congrats on getting your camera.

On another forum someone stated "WEX (Canon dealer in the UK) is now saying that there wont be a card reader included in the box and these have to be applied for using a redemption certificate via Canon UK" not sure how true this is.

I assume mine with have the reader also, as B&H did not say anything. I will know for sure tomorrow.

Probably there was some supply of readers out there and Sandisk distributed them where they so chose. Maybe the UK wasn't so lucky...maybe the first batch already went to Canon and they sent them to the US (edit Canada )

I certainly agree with that!! Post impressions as you go.

3 items confirms that you are Canadian after all....I knew it

Did the Sandisk stuff and battery come separately packaged or did Canon make a special box for the pre-orders?

Thanks everyone. After using four different 1D series cameras the 1Dx2 was the only disappointment. The Sun Disk reader has 2 yrs. warranty, memory card 30 yrs., both made in China, and spare battery is made in Japan. At this time memory cards seem available, but the reader may be soon in short supply. All packaged separately. I’m still undecided if I want the 512 or 2x256 cards. The serial # suggest one of the early units off the assembly line. After checking the new monster, there will be some clicking outdoors and comparisons to my current gear. Initial impressions
