Did it fix your Custom mode issue as promised? What about freezing? Seems the release notes about the freezing issue don't match up with the reports on here as no one had the level on in the first place.

Well I setup my custom modes after the new firmware and it is doing the same thing. The custom functions work fine going from OVF to live view and back again but when I go from stills to video and back something happens. I lose the basic screen with my settings, stays in C1 and does nothing else. I pulled the battery and still no help. If even put it in AV mode from M mode. I will give Canon a call and let them know. No lock ups with the level on but I did not have many in the first place.

I set my 1dx II the same way and it never had an issue going from stills to video.

Damn! Nice shot Rob. What brand of corn were you hand feeding him to get him in that close?

Please don't post that over in the spring thread. You'll put my heavily cropped poor light Tom shots to shame.

Notice how I just gave myself an out for the poor quality of my shots.

Thanks, my secret is Tractor Supply cracked corn Seriously some of them will come 4-5ft away from me. Not so much the males but they get pretty close too.

Not much. I had an issue with the custom C1, C2 and C3 and the new firmware did not address it. I called CPS and they did not know why so they wanted to take a look. Only happened when switching from stills to video and back again. Nothing major but I do think it is a glitch.

While my camera is at the Camera hospital :-( I am using Amy's 1dx Mark II. Now that I have been away for a bit from it here are a few things I really notice.

- The speed of the 2x on the 600mm is really improved, it does not hunt like the 1dx II does.

- No sure why but you do notice the weight difference, not enough really to make a difference but I do feel it.

- Shooting with heat waves/atmosphere is really improved (I struggled getting the woodchuck shots in focus, the one below is one of the better shots) granted I pushed it using a 2x in that situation but it hunted a lot more.

- Files do have a different look/feel using my same processing. I tend to be liking the 1dx Mark III file better, they seem more organic/natural (this is more of a personal taste)

- The AF system in general feels like it zones in and sticks to the subject better, like a laser ( do not get me wrong both are great at AF but this is better with the III )

- Now that I only use it, I really miss the AF smart controller, not a biggie but now I have it I do prefer it.

Just a few of my feelings between the 2 cameras using the OVF and 600mm with the 2x, nothing scientific just some field use.

This is not knocking the 1dx Mark II at all, still is a great camera ( I have to say this in case my wife reads it :-D ) seriously it really is a great camera and some of the used prices are insane.

Here are a couple I shot with the 1dx Mark II, hope that is okay to post them here.

I'm sorry Rob but I had to report this post to Fred as it blatantly violates the thread title

I sure hope Amy's birthday is coming up soon so she can get the 1DXIII that she deserves and gets to stop slumming it with the 1DXII

One question though....how can a camera improve shooting through heat haze? Won't the haze/distortion be there optically no matter what? I will give you that some issues with heat haze shooting is from the camera actually screwing up AF because of the haze and then I agree that maybe the 1DXIII could be better at nailing focus but the raw haze will still optically be there won't it?

Here is my first screen grab from a 5.5k clip. I used CLog and saved the image in DPP (Only software I have to open Movies in raw). Final edit was in PS. This was at 1200mm on a tripod. Detail is better on Flickr

1/250th I used auto ISO but I believed is was at 1000 ISO for this scene.

The more I use this camera, the more I like it. I do wish it had more resolution, but the amount of printing I do is minimal and I've been happy with most cropping I've had to do. Part of me wants to pick up a 90D fir specific long distance birding situations. I've been very pleasantly pleased with high ISO, particularly good when using Topaz noise reduction (although it seems to occasionally make some weird artifacts on 1DX3 files in clean areas of background). I've been happy to shoot bird photos at ISO6400-10,000, although would obviously prefer lower ISOs when possible.
