p.1 #1 · Official 1dx Mark III picture thread

Thanks to CPS I received a loaner today to try out. I only had a brief time with it so far. So far the silent mode is very nice, liked that feature on the R. The AF controller is just so nice, very fast and responsive. I only worked with jpegs and the files are really good. I feel like the AF is a little faster when using the 2x but I want to test this against the 1dx II. The AF seems overall just more responsive, at least on the static shots. I hopefully I will get a chance at something in flight before I have to return it. Weather is not great unfortunately. I think Monday will be my best chance for flight. Funny it does feel lighter, I did not think I would even notice it, but I do. Hoping to test out the AF at f11 with my 200-400mm, that could be very nice. Still need to go thru and tweak my settings a bit but overall I think this will be a nice upgrade. Here are a couple shots, nothing fancy but that is all I have around this time of year.

The squirrel is 1000 ISO but that is childs play for the 1dx II. I will try for some higher ISO's. The weather is going to be cloudy so I should be able to do something. The 1000 ISO is really clean with the jpeg. I think Raw files will be really good in the high ISO range.

A couple things I'd like to know more about if you have time:

1) With the AF-On smart controller....if you are using a single point or expansion when you go to actually activate AF-ON is there a tendency for the point to move a few spaces just from whatever minor sideways movement your thumb makes when pushing in the button? Did you play with the sensitivity settings for this button?

2) Live View in Mechanical and in E-shutter....is it showing a slideshow or a true live stream? Does this change depending on how high you set the FPS? Or can you even find a way to change the FPS in LiveView as Jason said he couldn't find a way?

3) DSLR mode: In full 61pt with user selected starting point....can it reliably track a bird when not against sky? In 61 pt mode with camera selected starting point does it seem to latch onto movement instead of just contrast?

EDIT: As a part answer to #2, I re-watched the shutter sound video and see that in E-shutter there is only one FPS setting and that is 20FPS. You can select other drive modes but it brings up a message saying all modes operate at the highest FPS. But in Mechanical LV one can select the different FPS options.

Thanks Rob!!

As a side note if you have an L bracket for the Mark 2 does it look like it will work with the 3?

Well that is an easy one, I do not need weather for that. Sorry to say the RRS L bracket is a no go. The base is just a little wider and it does not screw down all the way. It is close but looks like a new one will be needed. The L part looked like it would clear everything. Other brands may fit but they may all have an issue seeing the camera base is wider.

Let me know once you fill up the RAW buffer OR before your finger loses sensation, whichever happens first. It is hard to do on the dx2, so wondering what the dx3 would do. Did you buy the 6-finger glove from B&H yet ?

Can I throw mine in here too?!? (I had the camera first, dammit!)
All shots taken with Canon 1DXmkIII (pre-production body kindly loaned to me by Canon Canada) + Canon 600mm f4L. RAW files converted to TIFF and then processed in Lightroom.

The jpegs are looking very nice especially for the conditions I as shooting in yesterday. Todays weather is crap

No flight today, hopefully tomorrow. If someone needs a second shooter at the Super Bowl I am in

For those that use screen grabs, it appears there is no way to do screens grabs with 5.5K or 4K full frame (why Canon why?) The crop mode you can use like the 1dx II. I know you can do it in a outsider editor but in camera is just faster.

This is most likely due to the codec they use now. 1DX II was shooting video in Motion JPEG which was much easier for camera to grab a frame from.

How big are video files now?
Can you post the file size of a RAW/CLOG video file in 5.5K and 4K?

For example a 10 second video of the same scene with the same ISO settings. And if you still have a 1DXII, could you record the same scene and post a file size @30fps?

Thanks!
