p.10 #4 · Light Lens Lab (LLL) replica lenses discussion & image thread | |
Long time listener, first time caller.
I have both the 8-Element and the 'Elcan' replicas and am extremely pleased with both. The build quality is excellent with my only quibble being that the aperture doesn't feel quite as smooth or precise as I would like.
These thoughts only pertain to use on film..as that's how I shoot:
The 8-Element is so wonderfully tiny. At full aperture, the draw is low contrast with gobs of coma and SA. It's an 'artistic' look, but useful. Stopped down to 2.8 things start coming together in a more predictable/dependable manner. Beyond that, images are gorgeous with elegant gradation.

I've only had the 'Elcan' for a brief period of time...and the weather hasn't been very nice, so I have few photos to share. Because it's a 50mm f/2 M-mount lens, I can understand the desire to compare to a Summicron, but I think a fairer comparison is to a modern Tessar/Elmar type lens (low element count, compact). I don't have a modern Leica Elmar (only a 50's Red Scale f/3.5 which is definitely out-performed by the 'Elcan' at 3.5), but I do have the Nikkor 45mm f/2.8 P and it compares very favorably to the 'Elcan.' At full aperture, it is reasonably sharp in the middle, but definitely falls apart away from center...in a pleasing way. At f/2.8 it is fairly predictable and much more usable. As the MTF chart show, it never gets completely sharp in the far corners...but, I rarely photograph landscapes, so this doesn't really bother me.
