The capability is there, but dunno if Canon will release the firmware or want to keep it in house
By the way the announcement was phrased, it sounds like they'll be publishing it eventually for consumers to self update. I assume that they would rather have their technicians working on more important things than updating firmware if they can avoid it
I went ahead and updated the firmware on the lens with no apparent issues. I will try and test this a bit more later today, but based on the first few shots in repeating what I did prior to the firmware update, it appears to be resolved. Wondering if anyone else has completed the update and saw the issue resolved?
According to documentation, Firmware addresses this: "Fixed a phenomenon when performing AF shooting to capture a subject at close-range with the focus distance approximately set to the Tele-end (200mm), the image may become slightly front-focused."
I’ve been checking out the new firmware. My results show some improvement, but not a total fix. Before, at 200mm/2.8 and near distances I had almost zero depth of field behind the focal point. Now I have maybe 1mm of depth behind the focal point and about 4mm in front of the focal point. So better, but not ideal. I would still not rely on it to take closeups at 200mm/2.8. If I drop down to 100mm or so I get the normal 1/3 in front 2/3 in back field of focus.
