Currently I am not a Nikon user, but thinking of buying a Z6 only to be able to use this lens.
Does 99% of Nikon users + 10% of non-Nikon users calculate to 109%?

What is the point?

I did not try yet the new Noct S, however I did order one and No, I do not intend to use it as it will remain in it's carton and black box.

I do not shoot night stars and rarely shoot Posed Portraits and it will be a waste of time shooting Active Portraits or Fashion,

I guess, there would be a use for video work as long as you are in medium shot or to call it properly an American shot and definitely no close up with moving subjects at f.95/f.1.8.

1- The official video clip "Moments" shows stopped down close ups shots with a "voilée" effect and the other shots are wide open.

2- There is minimum camera movement and it is a horizental movement perpendicular to the plane i.e. Panning or Trucking.

3- There is no footage to evaluate the lens color temp and RGB render type. All I could spot are the yellows of the little girl - the cats eyes and the tramway. Now there is a reason not to show the RGB colours and only the different shades of yellows which is a mix of RGB and I dread to find out why and to assess all colours.

4- Cats eyes on the lens periphery are noticeable.

5- Cost wise, it is on the expensive side for a still camera lens even if it is a specila lens.
However, the cost is at par with PL - PV - CP.... etc mounts .

In fact. the new Noct S is a two trick ponnies. The first is for video and the second is to annoy the neighbours.

So what's the point?

Cat eyes will always be visible in lenses with some amount of vignetting and which don't introduce a good truckload of field dependent aberrations to pit them against vignetting, at least up until a certain a amount of defocus (some of these aberrations will be ruinous to bokeh). That's the Leica Noctilux strategy. I don't think that too much can be extracted from the full size nighttime shot made available but I don't believe that we're seeing quite enough aberrations to significantly balance out vignetting (and the bokeh balls of the sample in the street at night don't seem to show signs that they are).

The only effective way to minimise them without an excessive amount of field dependent aberrations is to not have much vignetting in the first place. I'd be surprised if the Noct vignettes as much as the Leicas. I may be proven wrong but I actually think that this might turn out to be one of the Noct's most significant strengths.

For using lens like this, you don’t need tons of in focused pictures, you don’t use it capture running kids or pets, but for the ones in focus, you for sure can create something special if you know how to use it wisely. That is the fun part of this hobby, is it?

Photography as art form in many field is never about how many in focused images you get but which one is really worked

If you have the manual focus skill and can afford it and don’t mind size, just go for it. What is wrong?

No dude.

Owning this lens is a question of obsession (healthy or otherwise) as much as wealth. I could pre-order multiple copies of their lens right now, but won't because I will never use it, and will never look at the MTF or anything else as justification for its obesity and expense. Other people really care about that stuff. Some are truly obsessive about it. And I think that latter category will be interested in this lens. Also interested in the lens (possibly) are collectors, and people whose cash is so disposable that $8K really does mean nothing to them when spent on photo equipment.

No skilled photographer needs this lens to make great images. I imagine very few skilled photographers (or working photographers) would choose a normal prime that weighs nearly 5lbs (!!) over one that weighs far less.

What's interesting to me about this lens is the "statement" it makes about what Nikon thinks people are looking for in a camera system. In a world where point-and-shoots and pocket cameras are being supplanted by smartphones and computational imaging continues to expand its reach, Nikon apparently believes that some people will lust after a 5lb, $8000 0.95 optic - perhaps in the same way that Ferrari believes people will hanker for technologically obsolete but nonetheless impressive 800hp gas guzzlers.

Maybe they're right! A lot of other camera companies are taking the same gamble on heavy, onerous, optically perfect equipment - Leica and Panasonic each are releasing progressively heavier equipment to satisfy this apparent need for lead-weight, high cost cameras and lenses that purport to deliver the perfect imaging experience. Even Sony's latest generation cameras are a little bigger than the last (kind of like what's been happening to cars - compare the size of a 2020 Honda Civic to a 1990s Honda Accord!)

Maybe they figure the lightened weight of your wallet compensates for the extra mass you have to schlep around. Not me though. I already know the money is nearly weightless, but the Nikon Noct is... well... not.

Need vs want

And the samples of this lens clearly show that there is no other lens can make the same look image. If you want create that look, you have no alternative.

As for obsession, I think buying any pro glasses or pro body from Leica to Sony, Nikon or Canon can be qualified using the same logic. Expensive is relative. Tolerant to Weight and size is also relative.

The same thing can also apply to car, watch, house, education etc.... I don't think everyone need to agree to the same "golden" standard or judge people that way.

My point is: Please don't think this lens doesn't offer any value. It does and if you want to have that look and performance, unfortunately you just have to pay for it and I do believe it is out of most people "willing to pay" range.

I don’t wish I could own this lens, and I’m sure many others here are of a like mind. This lens is a tool, with specific strengths, and many weaknesses. Some pros will buy it as it will earn its keep. For most of us this lens is in the same category as expensive cars and watches ie a vanity purchase. I’ve long since grown out of wanting to own something because it’s heavily marketed, or highly sought after, or whatever. I have learnt that fulfillment comes from working hard at what you love the most, and tools are an aid, not an end.

And for what it’s worth, I can afford this lens, but it is so niche, and so big and heavy that I wouldn’t make effective use of it. I’d rather spend my time on my current obsession, namely ice hockey.

That's simply not true. Less convenient, but you can easily get this FOV and depth of field using the Brenizer Method. It'll take a bit longer, but taking an 85/1.4 or so, standing in the same spot you'd want for the 58/0.95 and shooting a few shots to stitch to the slightly wider FOV would work just fine, and would yield the same depth of field and background blur.

Heck, I took this shot on Micro 4/3 with an 85/1.4 and stitched images (and a lot of them due to the wide FOV finalized), which is equivalent to a 32mm f/0.5 on full frame, and if cropped to 58mm FOV would yield the same look as a 58/0.95 on FF.

https://admiringlight.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/blossoms_big.jpg

Is that as quick and easy? No, but considering how rarely one needs a look like this, it's a more viable solution for most than having a lens that costs $8K and stays on the shelf 99% of the time because it's impractical.

I remember you posted that photo, and checked back. It was in 2013, and you posted it to prove that one doesn't need a full frame camera to get that look. Now you are using mainly a full frame camera, right?

A great photograph. But as to the work that went into it, I think it's a difference of whether you enjoy tweaking with your gear and electronics, or whether you do this for a living - not only because of time, but because of reliability and quick availability of the result for the client.

The sample images look extraordinary and sure the size/weight is a concern but this lens will set some amazing bench marks. I just do not understanding the negativity and you just choose to not buy the lens Kudos to Nikon...
