Woohoooo! Scored one today! A couple of weeks ago, I called about 20 stores across the country. I put my name on the wait list at a few places. Murphy cameras called me today and notified me that they received the lens today and if I still wanted it. I didn't hesitate to place my order..I should have it by Friday! Can't wait to take some pics of pumpkins and cats 😂😂

Nice! Murphys Camera is my LCS, they're good people.

Just picked up this lens from buy and sell! Have shot sony for the last few years, but I have always had a soft spot for Nikon and have been blown away by the images posted in this thread and in reviews, so picked up a Z7 to play around with the 85 S

Random question, but has anyone here used the Tamron 85/1.8 and have any thoughts how it compared to the Z? I know the Z is stellar, but thought the Tamron was supposed to be quite good, better than the Nikon 85/1.8.

Love the Z primes, but thinking about the Tamron's to save a few bucks (don't shoot AF all that often) and to use on a Df as well as the Z6 with the FTZ... talk me out of it...

I had the tamron 85 1.8 VC when I shot Canon a while back. Found on the 5d4 that it wasn't quite as snappy in terms of autofocus as the sigma art 85 1.4, and though it is sharp enough wide open, I was never blown away like the sigma art. I found that AF was a little inconsistent, apparently it has something to do with the VC being on or off, but I didn't bother trying to suss it out. It's close to comparable to the Nikon 85 1.8G, which I've used in the past as well. I wasn't blown away by the tamron 85 personally, but I know it has its fans.

How do you feel about the switch from Sony to Nikon? I have never loved the Sony system but it was the best option for when I was looking for a lighter full frame system, and I have always preferred the ergonomics on Nikon bodies.

Appreciate the thoughts. I had the Tamron 35/1.8 previously, don't really shoot action etc. so not concerned that it's too slow and never noticed trouble with the 35, so I think I'd be okay there, but I do like good optics. I liked the 35, especially up close and know it's reasonably sharp as well. Guess I need to give it some more thought...

As to the switch, I'm pretty happy. I think the lenses were as much a reason as the body (ironic considering this post) but Nikon did a better job with a compromise between speed, size and IQ. Sony always felt like I could have Speed and Size or IQ and Speed, but the third choice was always a huge compromise then. I'm also really enjoying the 300/4 AF-S and the 70-200's that adapt seamlessly. With Sony I couldn't justify the cost of their offerings and while Canon had some affordable adaptable glass, I never liked Canon. I also like Nikon's joystick way better, Sony's was mushy. Manual focus aides for chipped lenses are also great. Body size I do wish was a bit more compact, but it's ergonomically quite good. I was luke warm at first but the more I used it the more I liked it. Ultimately the lenses won me over. Kinda rambling there, but hope it helps.

I highly recommend Z 85S if money is not an issue. It holds value as well. I'm very happy with my 85S. I hate the FTZ (sold it). It's bulky and has weird shape.

Yes, the Tamron 85 is a lovely lens, and is my default recommendation for Nikon DSLRs. Compared to the 85/1.8G:

1. Less flare
2. Less LoCA
3. About as sharp or a little sharper
4. Faster AF
5. Nicer rendering

The VC on it isn't great, and I leave it off unless I'm desperate as it also affects acuity, and when it's on, it's not very effective. For astro people with trackers, coma performance on the Tamron is stellar from about f/2.8-4.

The 85S on Z-mount on the other hand is in a completely different league. It is possibly Nikon's finest lens in recent history, and I include things like the 105E and 28E in that assessment, as well as the Zeiss Otus. The rendering on it is pretty amazing as the contrast on in-focus areas is much higher than the OOF areas, so you get a nice 3D effect and it looks almost like you had lighting set up. Like the Otus, you can use any aperture on the 85S with no apology.

I shoot the Tamron 85 on my D850, and the 85S on my Z6. The Tamron works OK with the FTZ after their recent firmware release.

Thanks. Money isn't an issue per se, just looking at value and use. Can get a 35 & 85 Tamron for the price of the 85Z. Also use the FTZ with some of the long glass, so it's usually in my bag anyway. But...

Thanks for the thoughts and probably need to just stick with the Z. Low contrast OOF and better corrected are both big pluses.

For you to see how the 85 1.8S looks like on Z6. It balances so well and I feel very solid, well built, the best among all 85 1.8 lenses that I ever had, including Sony FE, Nikon F mounts.

Every year, Sydney has the Sculptures by the sea exhibition on the coastal walk that goes from Bondi Beach to Bronte Beach. The exhibition part of the walk is about 2kms along quite a spectacular area overlooking the Pacific Ocean/Tasman Sea. The exhibition is usually run at this time of year for about 3 weeks. Is there a better back drop for such an exhibition? I think not!

There was quite a crowd as this is a popular tourist attraction and I had to wait many times for a clear shot at some exhibits.

I took this opportunity to use my 35 f1.8S, 50 f1.8S and 85 f1.8S as much as I could but I did use the 14-30 f4S and 24-70 f2.8S for some images as well. Here are the 85 f1.8S images. I purposely didn't remove the vignetting on some as I thought they looked better with the vignetting left. Like the 35 f1.8S, man this lens is sharp wide open!

There will be 35mm f1.8S, 50 f1.8S 14-30 f4S and 24-70 f2.8S images in their respective threads as well. I hope you like them as much as I did taking them.
