Quick test shot, wide open, with my daughter in the living room, I have to allow her a silly face before she'll participate. Full shot then a 100% crop of the eyes. Light source, as you can tell from the eye reflection, is behind the camera from a window. Shot in RAW, handheld, IBIS on, zero edits, converted to JPG in LR Classic. Used eye AF for focusing. Honestly forgot I was on 800 ISO but there's zero noise in the photo and it did not affect the outcome at all.
Looking real good. On the fence for this 85 or a 70-200. These photos make a compelling argument though, and haven’t even gotten to the good stuff yet.
Cross-posted from the 85S announcement thread...straight out of the camera with Camera Neutral settings (shot raw, but this is the 2MP JPG transferred via SnapBridge).
In the full-size nef, it’s critically sharp on the eye which is exactly where the focus point was placed.
I love the smoothness of the bokeh and it’s natural fall-off.
I‘ve just bought the 85mm f/1.8 S, will post some pictures later. On the Z7, at difficult shutter speeds, there is maybe 15% „ghosting“ on pixel sharp horizontal edges. This 1px blur is invisible on the 85G due to chromatic aberrations. With this new lens, you MUST use electronic shutter for best results (unless under flickering light etc.).
A couple of snaps from the backyard. Sorry this isn't visually pleasing content, just figure people might want to see something to start out. I may try to setup my garage studio tomorrow to test it further. Bonus points if anybody tells me what type of flower this is. My FIL planted it in my backyard 2 years ago and it's been blooming like crazy this year.
Shot RAW, converted to JPG in LR Classic, no edits except for crops. Two shots, each with a 1:1 crop to show detail. First at 2.8, the next at 5.6.
EDIT: Decided to bring down the highlights in the flower on the very last image posted here, the 1:1 crop, to help you guys see some more detail. I left the full image right above it alone.
Base on more samples and review show, I’d say as great as this lens can be in sharpness. There is clear effort Nikon trying to balance contrast, resolution and bokeh.
The image never show in your face type of brutal contrast/sharpness if you don’t force edit it. And focus transition is just beautiful and problem free. (58g LoCA can create false edge problem on transition region such as face, hair etc)
I couldn't resist going out at high noon today just to get some shots, which I never do.
I will probably get back out closer to dusk in hope to get some keepers.
Doing various tests in my room, thus no pictures here. Bokeh is fine, without any specific complaints. Better chromatic correction than the Zeiss Milvus 1.4/85. Thus the perfect lens if you must or want to play it safe. However, the Zeiss has better colors and better bokeh.

it's amazing that the camera can pull that color, so perfectly!
