My 85mm f/1.8S arrived today, so of course some obligatory wide-open dog photos since I had to make sure the thing works.
So far so good. This is replacing a Sigma 105 Art. I'm saving a bunch of weight and a bunch of money and on the Z camera it is far more confident. Sigma wins on obliterating background, but I still have the 200 f/2 to scratch that itch.
Hey all, here are a couple of test shots with extension tubes. Sharpness and rendering seems really good on the 85 so far, so I was curious how it would do for some close-up work occasionally. Photos will be bare lens, then 11mm tube, 18mm tube, then both 11mm and 18mm attached, somewhere pretty close to MFD on each.

105mm 1.4 still impressive as ever. I'm considering it against the Sony 135 GM and it's a hard choice.
I sold all of my DSLR bodies, F lenses except 105mm f/1.4 because of it characteristic. Is it lightning fast on focus? No. Is it super sharp as those new Z mount glass? No. But something about this lens is unlike any others, and it also one of reason stop me from jump ship to Canon, Sony. I can't wait for Z mount 85 f1.2 and hopefully I can get my hand on one of those

Looking at these again, and I am impressed with the performance with tubes. I assume it becomes a manual focus lens, but nice 85S rendering stays with the tubes, which is great.

Actually, AF is still supported with the tubes. The compromise, however, is a loss of focusing ability at the long end. Infinity focus position is no longer the furthest point that can be focused on. Instead, the best I can do is just a few feet away. This is where a true macro lens would perform better, being able to focus 1:1 all the way through infinity without adding or removing tubes.
As someone that doesn't have this lens but loves the photos it takes, how do you guys feel the new(ish) Z MC 105mm f/2.8 S would do in place of this lens? I love the idea of this lens but I'd rather have the macro capabilities of the 105 and also use it for portraits when necessary. I'm thinking a 50mm and 105mm would be a great pair.
