It is reassuring to know, even before we get the final specifications, that the camera is not going to work. Or at least, if the opposite turns out to be true, that it shouldn't have worked.

So very true. The only logical thing for the working Canon pros to do is snatch up one of those lame rehashed A9's they slapped a II on. They'll only be able to shoot at 10 fps in full 14 bit mode but they'll get use to it. Or they could just shoot in full gimp mode and get 20 fps.

Time for Canon to file chapter 11 and close the doors.

According to B&H, it’s a Updated CMOS Sensor. The fact that the MP count is not stated anywhere, leads me to believe it hasn’t changed.

It has to be all new sensor, the DPAF arrangement is all new. It won't be the same 20MP sensor, but I doubt it'll be more than 24MP as nearly all the rumours have been BS as usual so I'll believe 28MP when I see it.

I talked to the Canon rep at the 1DX 3 exhibit at PhotoPlus Expo and he implied that Canon had not given up on the DO technology. So, maybe there will be a 600 DO some day, but probably not anytime soon and probably as an R series lens.

Also, I think to be competitive with Sony, which is what the Mark 3 is all about, they will have to get close to 30mp. Clearly they are using significantly upgraded chip technology in this camera. To do any AI for auto-focus, there has to be s substantial upgrade to the processor technology, so there is no reason to think they won't do the same for the image chip.

Anyway, this pre-announcement in itself is a big departure for Canon, so they are clearly worried about competition from Sony and it bodes well for other future pro-level cameras from them.

I was wondering the other day why none of my Nikon and Sony images have ever placed in any contests....now I realize it probably is because I've been using 12-bit on the A9 and D850. That's it...I'm going to start shooting my A9 in Single Shot mode and deal with shitty buffer on the D850 in 14-bit in order to start making award winning images again....or maybe just buy a 1DXIII....

See! I knew you would come around to your senses sooner or later.

Looking forward to seeing your 1DxIII work posted here in the near future Geoff!

I’m thinking probably around mid-late December. I feel like in the past it’s been like a month and a half to two months between development announcement and the actual announcement but I could be wrong.

AFAIK, Canon has never done a development announcement before so it could be anytime. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
Nikon is usually 1.5-2 months after. So I'd expect the D6 later November.

1DX was announced Oct. 2011 and released March 2012. 1DXII was announced early February 2016 and available in April. Both of those based on DPR initial announcement news releases.

I think Canon has also announced product development for the 200-400, which was pre-released for the London Olympics and finally released to the public later that year. Also IIRC there were product development announcements for the new Mark III super tele, plus the RF lens release roadmap...

If they were trying to preempt an A9II defection, it has temporally worked.

I think Sony did as much or more than Canon did to preempt A9 II defectors 😂

The 1DX was a full announcement with all details, not a development announcement.
The Mk III lenses were an announcement in Sept and released in Dec. But no development announcement that I can find.

The 200-400 was a development announcement in Feb 2011 and finally a real announcement May 2013...so hopefully we don't have to wait 2+ years for the 1DXIII

So I guess this is the official end to the MP wars? Never seen a such a high profile camera bury what the MP improvement is.

I have a 1DXII and I guess you always want better, and sometimes the AF lets me down, but I have to remember that I was coming from a 5DII before the 1DXII. 1DXII is still perfect camera to me. Plenty of MP, video (if I ever want to) and insane FPS for when a "time-machine vacuum cleaner' to capture swaths of time. Built like a tank.

I thought the III was going to be a huge leap in sensor tech, or maybe even a pellicle mirror- but no. Maybe I'll pick up one used next decade. I'm on a "once a decade nice camera" plan...

Mk III just based on the only development announcement I could find (200-400) had over two years between development and announcement. But in reality I don't expect the 1DXIII to be announced any later than Feb 2020.

My prediction is we will never see a 1DX IV DSLR...but who knows?? I believe by Summer Olympics 2024 we would be seeing an RF 1 series. I think the 2020 Pro Sports DSLRs (1DXIII and D6) will be the last of their kind.

But I also think 2024 is too long to wait for a RF 1 series so my bet is both Nikon and Canon have a sports MILC (like A9) ready for 2022 Winter Olympics. Which is also the next World Cup year.

You may be right but I think it will be a bad move for Canon to wait that long for the Pro Mirrorless.

I updated my post as you were posting with my 2022 Olympic Games and World Cup prediction. That could actually mean end of 2021 as Winter Olympics fall in Feb.

Canon Rumors got some tidbits about the 1DXIII beyond the released specs:

The battery life is nothing short of amazing, much better than the 1DX Mark II.
The silent shutter mode in liveview is absolutely silent.
The eye AF works incredibly well (via liveview we are assuming)
The AF-ON trackpad is so innovative, works fast and it very precise. In the source’s words, “it’s a real revolution. Nobody will be using the old joystick”

These came from the source that leaked photos of the camera to them before the announcement.

The Af-on trackpad continues to intrigue me more than anything else. Not that I'd spend $7K for that though
