Update from Aurora and their magnetic rear ND filters (and light pollution reduction)

"Our China office finally receives the magnetic link prototype filters and they works very well. They are sending the prototypes to us and we expect to receive them in the next two weeks as shipping packages from China to US has been very slow due to the reduced international flights.

Once we have the prototype filters in US we will send you a set of ND64 for the Sigma 14-24/2.8 E. We also have prototype filters for the Canon 11-24/4, and Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 / 14mm f1.8

The good news for FE 12-24/4 G users is that they are developing a rear ND solution for this lens as well.

Fred, did they mention when they expect to have this ready for retail sale?

I certainly hope your new filter works out. This could be a situation where someone within Kase is "stealing" the OEM packaging and counterfeiting the filter itself. This could certainly explain why the actual ebay filter looks different than BH authentic one. I know its a stretch but plausible.

FYI, I have noticed very slight FC at 100% crop at extreme right of only some test images @14mm@ and infinity focus toward the top right corner but havent tested it further as it is so minimal and only on some images. Just an FYI.

I'm not sure. I've been using the Kase 6-stop (purchased from B&H) and it goes inside the slot very easily. I have mounted/unmounted more than 20 times and it's still in one piece. Looks like this one will last.

Some day I need to do a clinical controlled test on where and why lens flare occurs with this lens. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't. It is a pretty cool flare, I'd like to be able to get it "on demand" for video.

#2 I got some, but #3 nothing. In any case, what a lens!

It took me two tries to get a nicely centered copy of 14-24. Really happy with it. I wanted to like Sony 12-24 but I went through 4 copies and gave up - all were pretty decentered.

Copy two being delivered today. I sort of have dread....which I'm not saying is reasonable. But judging what is acceptable performance vs not, weighing cost of the equipment, is one of the areas that I hate when buying lenses.

Totally reasonable in my opinion; it's definitely the worst part of buying. I just returned copy two for massive field tilt, and number three will be on its way soon. Not sure how many more times I want to do this.

Good luck to you!

Unfortunately no. As soon as I get the new prototype, I will update this thread.

Thanks, Fred! I'm really on the fence regarding this lens and I'm considering dropping my 16-35mm F4 to spring for it. But I really do hope that a hassle-free ND filter is possible for video. The Haida one is alright but I don't feel like using gloves or cloths to wipe smudges when I'm out in the field just quickly trying to drop in a filter.

Thanks, at the end of the day I know if I can see it at apertures I normally shoot....that I'm just not going to be able to get past it. So I'm glad I sent it back. The second copy came today, but it's a cold, rainy, and miserable day outside. I did some informal handheld testing out my upstairs windows, and it looks close to perfect. Or at least close enough that I believe it's a keeper.

What a relief.

They do say the 3rd time is the charm, I hope it is for you!

My OCD was really hitting me on the last shot, until I realized that the building itself is not symmetrical lol

So I compared my 2nd copy of the Sigma to my Laowa 15, Batis 18, Loxia 21, and GM 24. It truly is a bag of primes.

It will be interesting to see how cumbersome the Nisi CPL setup is when I shoot waterfalls. I picked up one of the Kase rear NDs as well.

I'm glad you finally got a good copy Tim. It's a truly remarkable lens. I only own another zoom (100-400GM) and highly recommend both.

Thanks Fred, I have 3 native zooms....the 100-400 like you, and the 24-105 which is useful in certain situations. Granted not fast, but I have 14-560mm covered in 3 lenses (with the 1.4 TC.)

This 2nd copy seems pretty well centered at all FLs, as good as I get with most primes.

(Previous) owners of the 12-24mm F4. Do you feel like the 14mm is limiting? I own the 16-35mm F4 and I'm worried I may not see much of a difference. Of course, 16mm is already quite wide but if you're already going for an ultrawide zoom, why not go all the way?

I haven't had the 12-24, but I haven't been frustrated or deterred by 14 as the widest option I have. I'd be more inclined to add the Voigtlander 10mm to my kit if I started to run into issues rather than lose the f2.8 and the image quality for all FL's from 14-24.

I wouldn't be caught without my Voigtlander 12.

Any of you guys who have the Nisi polarizer, have you found a plastic case to store it in when it's not mounted? I'm not a huge fan of the soft sided cases.

I use the Nisi cap with it mounted to the holder, and a 100mm slip on cap on the rear. The whole thing just goes into my shoulder bag.
