p.46 #3 · Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN first impressions | |
Was cloudy today until just before the sun was gonna go down under i quickly went out with Sigma 14-24mm. And best yet, one of the defence tower attractions in our city wich closes soon permanently was still open, and on top of it, orange sunset. Perfect situation to test this Sigma lens.
At 14mm, the lens is incredible sharp, i didnt take this for possible, especially wide open, with Roger Cicala always saying how hard UWA's are to design. Big win there. At 24mm wide open there is a bit of softness but not alarmingly so, sometimes at F5.6 too, but could be user error, i also have corner to corner sharp images at 19mm and 23mm (F5.6) wich where it matters to me. There is maximum a little tilt wide open at 24mm, the rest of the lens is perfect. Don't think i'm gonna send back, especially knowing perfect zooms don't exist.
This lens doesn't shame Gmaster lenses performance, at least equal, same for build quality. I had very high expections from this lens, as it's one of the reasons i left nikon (I love Sigma/tamron lens options like this, and it's simply ain't possible (native) on Nikon Z (and in future no garantee that it will be as good with reverse engineering). It was the big reason to go Sony. And this lens for me confirms my choice, what a gem! Nothing against nikon Z system, but i have to much pleasure in using lenses like this. I got in in black friday -10% (even cheaper slightly then DSLR lens), so i couldn't be happier, i'll do more test at 24mm, so see how good it is there, but i think it's no lemon (14-20mm is perfect), and stopped down, 24mm seem fine too.
I loved my nikon 20mm F1.8G lens, and apart from the weight, this lens beats it in almost everything (but mostly the capability of zooming). Colours are also very good, they've improved since Sigma 35mm art. Have had 0 signs of chromatic aberration yet! And that for UWA, i though there would be some faint signs, (but well controlled knowing Sigma) but this is even better.
For 1000 euro less then Gmaster it exceeded my expectations, perfect 'holy trinity' lens (UWA part). It's also much better in every single way then the nikon 14-24mm G (not a bad lens for it's time, but this lens, with E-mount optimized design is just waaay sharper (mostly less astigmatism), better at 24mm for sure, way less flare, less CA, i think less FC too, better build quality finish (there is play in nikon zoom and focus ring, not so with this Sigma, just as sturdy as Gmaster lens.
