Did the tube change MFD at all? How far from the sparrow were you? This is crazy!
I am not speaking on Alex's behalf but I did combine two TCs before although in my case, it was more the 1.4X with the 2X OTCs, and yes, an extension tube did change the MFD and the infinity focus. In other words, you cannot focus anything further away than 40-50 feet or so using the GM 600mm but you can focus closer than the MFD without the tube.
Buffalo law states that when a new toy is acquired, it will be overcast, windy and general crap out for at least 2 weeks. So you take what you can get :-)

Joshua, my buddy and I can focus at over 500 ft with stacking 2x and 1.4x on 600mm GM, BIF works too. Using two 2x did not change that much, still can focus up to 500ft

I left out one of the two “0s” there... Thank you, Shalu for correcting me and sorry, Jon!
Bachman's Sparrow.
New one for us. Traveling through southern FL, we picked up six new "life" birds and the 600GM, combined with the A7Riv, worked flawlessly throughout.
Today there is some spotty sun, but its 20-40MPH winds :-). Backyard testing time. The 2x converter performance on this is mind blowing. This time on a9.
