Another question as I am new to this lens, too: do you use the live 1.5 crop via APSC for far off subjects and is that better or worse than the optical 1.4 TC ( I am aware of the increased noise issue, but that's same with cropping)?

Personally, I would rather crop later in PP than using the APS-C mode. Some folks claim, using the A7r IV, at least, that the AF performance is better in the APS-C mode. The main reason for me to do it in PP is to be able to crop more effectively in terms of composition while the APS-C crop is baked in.

While in Ecuador in April of this year I came across a situation where even using a TC the target was still far away. Not a lot folks are aware of a feature built into Sony cameras. It is called Clear Image Zoom. The draw back of using that is the output is in JPG. So, not much editing latitude but I was pleasantly surprise at the resulting images from that feature. I would use that in a pinch.

Here is some info from Sony USA:
Clear Image Zoom is a function that uses the Sony® exclusive By Pixel Super Resolution Technology. It allows you to enlarge the image with close to the original image quality when shooting still images. The camera first zooms optically to the maximum optical magnification, then uses Clear Image Zoom technology to enlarge the image an additional 2x, producing sharp, clear images despite the increased zoom ratio.

Alex Phan used to display the CIZ images often. I think he mastered it. It may require some getting used to the method (?)
How would the atmospheric haze effect TCs, APSC & CIZ ( now that we are thinking about 1200mm)? Wonder if it'd be the same or different.
What you say about FF vs APSC cropping makes sense to me. Thanks.

Coming from someone whose work is so inspirational and for whom I have the utmost respect, I sincerely appreciate that compliment, Ronny!

To keep Joshua some company, here's one at 1200mm... a9 + 600 GM + 2x

Thank you for keeping me company, MItesh!

Here is another one and this one is from Conowingo last month. My trip there wasn’t photographically that rewarding. The weather didn’t; cooperate, the water level was too high and as such, the eagle didn’t hunt that much and when they did it was on the far end. I just deleted a bunch of images from that trip and I will have to do more before too long. But I was able to put faces on the names and I also met new friends.

Yes, I still had to crop that image even with the the 2X TC and ran Topaz Denoise AI on that to reduce the noise.

That image looks remarkably good for such a distant shot under low light conditions, Joshua! Here's another 1200mm shot.

This is just about a worst case scenario... 600mm with the 2xTC and cropped a little past ASPC sized on a dreary snow/sleet day. Good enough for social media and I was surprised at the detail there was there (I expected zero detail). Cleaned up with Topaz denoise (I included an cell phone shot for reference on the distances, good luck trying to find the snowy ).

What was great is that for an hour I was the only one observing the Snowy, lately I don't even stop to take photos because the crowds so I'll pick lousy photo but quiet over crazy crowds any day

John, after you had captured a few "insurance" images, would that be feasible to get somewhat closer? Don't get me wrong, I would love to be able to take images of a snowy under any circumstances . I am just asking as I don't know how skittish they are. Probably, if not feasible for whatever reasons, the next best thing would be to use the Clear Image Zoom feature in addition to the 2X TC. That would be like getting an effective 2400mm reach...

Unfortunately not, for a couple of reasons. First is that this was a National Wildlife Refuge and the dunes are off limits. The 2nd one is that there have been so many crowds around Snowy's over the last couple of years that I tend to let them be, especially if the approach would be open like this.

Thanks Joshua. I miss the eagles and snowy owls at home but am enjoying a few months in Florida's target rich environment.
