Broke down and ordered a copy from BH. Will compare to the 35i. If the 35i is the same size as the 45i, I wouldn't consider, but being almost 1 inch shorter is quite significant.

Is this something Sigma can fix via firmware?
Just from reading on here, it sounds like the tendency to back-focus is due to the optics of the lens when used with PDAF, so it seems unlikely that we'll see a fix. There was firmware update that supposedly improved AF-S mode accuracy. I only recently updated my lens firmware, so I don't have any firsthand experience with that.
I wonder how the masses are taking the AF issues. I mean, after all, buyers of this lens can't all be FM'rs. Just got mine today at a smoking deal. Going into it thinking that AFS is a bonus!
I"m really liking this lens. May add the 24mm 3.5 due to size and solid experience with the 45mm. I figure they both are fairly small and gap enough to be useful as a two lens set. Either together or with a zoom.
I really enjoy this lens too, rendering for family shots is so nice.
Subtle contrast, tones and accurate colors
Im pairing mine with
- CV 21 for wide, pocketable for daily walk - rendering is similar, maybe more contrasty
- either contax G90, or Tamron 28-200 if i need versatility
