Frustrating little guy to photograph....the Sony focus system is not ideal for this type of shooting...wish I had brought along my D500 which excels at quick acquisition with changing focus distances....the Sony system is dead in the water most of the time and won't even attempt to drive to a closer perch. When the kinglet never sits on one perch for more than a second, any hesitation is a recipe in frustration.

None the less, persistence pays off...

I would say you did very well as these guys are the toughest of all to capture. Do you think a 400GM or 600GM would do better than the 200-600 as far as focus acquisition ?

I have the 600 GM, and it happens with that too. It's the camera where the problem is, not the lens.

I think in a different scenario they would but they have the same inherent problem where it is just the camera not even attempting to drive the lens. If the camera tells the lens to drive then the 400/600 should be quicker.

Funny enough there was a guy beside me using the A9II and 600GM....well his issue was we were too close (and on a contained floating boardwalk unable to back up) and he was within the MFD
But he had the same issue with the lens not even driving.

I like your assessment of shooting these little guys with Sony. Your work is outstanding here, however.

First of all I assume you are using the middle setting on the focus limiter for these little monsters. I have far more branches and leaves to deal with than you did in so what I do is get my general focus area using zone and then use the lens button to quickly change my focus point to either S or expandable focus point w/o tracking.Make sense ?
On another note was thing about the 400GM or 600GM but am concerned about the typical MFD with the 600GM. I think the 400GM would be more versatile for my purposes . Thought s?

One benefit of the 400GM is that it has a shorter MFD and therefore greater MM at the equivalent focal lengths compared to the 600GM. This can certainly come in handy if you have subjects that would be within the 4.5m? MFD of the 600.

I was using S and M Flex Spot for the Kinglets. I eventually just adapted to the situation by either not trying for them on the more distant perches so that I was closer to "the zone" of correct focus distance when they came to a closer perch or I would aim at a large tree trunk next to the smaller perches to get focus close and then it would refine it fine on the kinglet. I played with the limiter a little bit near the end and I know a couple times they landed even within the MFD of the 200-600. If I was back at that same location next time I would just set the short end of the limiter and just wait for the perches that were close.
