This was shot this morning, at a distance in my backyard. I don't bird with the R3 much but I'm going to start more. Cooper's hawk and he did score a meal.

Edit, 1-3: I've been informed that this is actually a sharp-shinned hawk, not a Cooper's.

So, I rented a copy and some quick hand-held testing showed to me that while trying to manually focus that the image stabilization was not great. Compared to my 100-400GM it seems to not be able to provide a decently stable image in the viewfinder under magnification nor normal viewing even at 400mm.

With my 100-400GM, which I hand hold at 400mm all the time at 1/100sec, I can get to be pretty rock steady in the viewfinder while manually focusing.

That being said, a quick review of the images taken while hand holding the 200-600 looked pretty darned sharp, even at substantially below 1/600 sec at 600mm.

Does my A7RIII need a firmware update to work better with the 200-600 or maybe it's the copy that I rented?

I actually did a pretty broad infinity distance comparison of the 100-400GM, the 200-600G, both with and without the 1.4X TC against my 400/5.6 ED AI and 600/5.6 ED-IF AIS, both with and without the Nikkor 1.4xTC. I'll post this weekend, but my initial looks at the images show the 200-600 to be pretty darned good at 600mm right from wide open.

I shot the lens on my R3 yesterday, in a light rain and handheld. The images were cropped from the first image size that is slightly smaller since I cropped to straighten the top fence rail. I was pretty amazed with the resolution from the combo at the distance and conditions. Possible bad copy you were using.

After I replied to your post I was asked on Flickr about the distance of the pics in my previous reply to you. FYI, it was approximately 55 yds.

Hi Bill
Nice pictures of the hawk and it looks great on A7r III

Don't think John thinks that the quality of the pictures is poor
what he means is when he looks through the evf and makes focus enlargement it is difficult to see a stable image

I got my 200-600 yesterday and will have the TC 1.4 next week I hope
I checked on my A9 and A7r III and not with the TC
I don't think it's as bad as John sees it on mine bodys an my copy
I test on A7r III in 12.4x and 600mm sure it is difficult to keep still but not impossible the same on A9 in 9.4x magnification in MF-mode

Has Latest firmwire on A9 and 3.01 on A7R III

Thanks, Ronnie. Yes, I misunderstood what he was saying. I know how to do that on the a9 but I'm unaware of how on the R3.

Hungry Hawk Owl caught a vole, A9 + 200-600 +1.4x. It doesn't look that sharp here, not sure why.

Was unsure about how I would like my new 200-600mm. Even expecting to be disappointed in it vs my 100-400mm. Well the exact opposite happened and could not be happier. Granted its been horrible weather since I have received it but did get out a little bit with the 200-600mm and A9. What a great combo.
