With my 70-200/2.8 out for repair, I was without a lens for my son’s hockey game last night.....or at least so I thought. In a pinch, the 200-600mm did surprisingly well on my A73 behind dirty plexiglass. It was a bit long, but the extra reached opened up mid-ice from my usual behind the net shooting position.

Nice, any chance you can add exif? I'm curious what settings you ended up with.

Tried to rent a 200-600 this weekend, but the one copy the local pro shop has was already taken.
How is the sharpness across the frame wide open at 600mm? I use my long lenses for landscape shots, so infinity performance is my interest.
Considering replacing my very very good 600/5.6 ED-IF AIS Nikkor with this lens. The Nikkor is not quite pin sharp across the frame on my A7RIII, but it is very even in sharpness. Hopefully the 200-600 is as sharp at the long end wide open similarly to my excellent 100-400GM.

I am not sure if I want to pack/lug the 200-600 for landscape stuff. That's what the 100-400 is for, for me at least. One option is to get an A7RIV, you can get a lot of "reach" out of that baby..
I used the 200-600 for some foliage shots when I didn't have other lenses with me, most of them were not shot at 600mm, this is the only one shot at 600mm that I could find. I don't think it tells you much.

Many times the 100-400 it too short and it doesn't take the 1.4x TC very well (it's still very very sharp, but this combination has the well known corner issues) along with starting out at f/8 560mm. Many times I actually wish I had a 800mm!
Besides, if I'm already willing to pack my 2.8kg 600/5.6 I'd certainly be willing to pack the 2.1kg 200-600 instead.
Your shot has a bit of noise and sharpening artifacts when viewed at 100%, but it does show very even performance across the frame at 600mm wide open. Thanks!

Quick question on the 200-600mm. How is the sharpness from say the 200-400 range? I have the 100-400 that I will keep but considering adding the 200-600mm. Thanks

I’m seeing great images with the 200-600 n a9, a9ii, and a7iii. Why won’t this lens work for BIF with my a7riv? It’s fine for static stuff but that’s about it.

Maybe you're trying for the dinky little bierds Geoff likes
I had no trouble with Riv+1.4TC+200-600 at the dam and big bierds.
Kinda teasing about the little bierds. If my intent was little super fast flyers I
would use the a9/a9ii/d500.
