Maybe I need to revisit the 1200mm option. Those are fantastic. Of course your Chickadees are just better looking that our eastern versions too.

Yeah, this was the first time I'd revisited 1200mm for quite awhile...worked out okay but lots of misses...of course me using 1/200 on a Nuthatch while handholding 1200mm of focal length may have had more to do with the misses than anything wrong with AF or optics

That's a big boy, Rebort. A couple shots from yesterday morning at Conowingo, shot with the A7RIV, mostly at 840mm (with the 1.4 TC), AND heavily cropped. The JPEG files are about 2.5 to 6 MP. That makes me appreciate the resolution of the A7RIV. I got a lot of out of focus shots, perhaps due to operator error.

Some fantastic captures Douglas! When it hits it hits! Anyway you could be at the dam first around Dec 6-7? I need your magic with the weather! I've been there quite a few times and only once did I have Sun-----and then the eagles were not active at all

Thanks Robert! I think I can be at Conowingo for at least one of the two mornings you will be there. I will pm you.

To have a better chance of getting a good spot ,on weekdays, better get there before 5:45, on weekends, before 5:00 (gate opens at 5). Use your tripod to take up a spot, then go back to your car to stay warm until the sun comes up. Yesterday they opened up more areas to photographers. I met folks from Texas, California and even Asia who came all the way just for the eagles.

Thank you Ray. I am not big into birding like some here but since Conowingo is only 1 hour drive from where I live, I go there a few times a year to enjoy the nature. A couple more overhead shots from yesterday.

Where the camera is noted, most of these appear to be shot with the A9. Has anyone tried using the A6400/6600?

I too am interested in this. I just picked up a 200-600 yesterday, and I've got an a6600 on order. I plan on getting the 1.4x TC, as well. I'm staying busy at Conowingo Dam on the weekends, so once I get everything in, I'll let you know how it performs. I only have an a7 III at the moment.

This is just an initial guess based on Canon & Nikon crop bodies, but I would suspect that you'd be better off not using an extender with the Sony a6600. Better to use it as-is and crop the file when needed. The smaller crop sensors just can't handle the extenders like a FF sensor.

I’ve had good luck with my 1.4x on my Canon 500 II and 7D II. Sure, the 200-600 isn’t a $9000 prime, but I’m cautiously optimistic. It’d be nice to have something smaller and lighter for good light.

I too used the 1.4 on the 7DII and 500 f/4 II, and it was a big mistake. In my naiveté at the time, I was focused merely on the 1120mm "reach", instead of considering what effect the extender had on focusing and image quality. I wish I could relive those years, as I would have never used the extender with that body.
