Thanks so much! That was the info I needed. I will probably hold off on getting this lens for now. I do have plans of moving to the A9 series in the future. Much rather get the shot than the added IQ/dynamic range. I do miss my A7RII, though.

This lens is all about reach, if you need it. Just to answer your question about the A7iii - I used that combination until about a month ago when I traded in the 7iii for the A9. I wanted the extra responsiveness, but I will say that if you blow images up to 100-200%, and you are shooting at >1000 iso to get the shutter speeds you need, then *on average* I do see a small advantage in total IQ for the A7iii over the 9. I can't speak to the 9ii. Of course there is variation from image to image with either system and perhaps that variation is bigger than the difference between systems, but I think I gave up a tiny bit of IQ going to the 9. Those a7iii pixels are pretty nearly perfect. Here is a white-crowned sparrow (no crop), taken with the A7iii w mechanical shutter on its fastest fps. In this shot the sparrow is crouched, ready to launch. In the very next image in the burst, the sparrow was completely out of the frame off to the left! I don't think the A9 will do better on the crouched bird, but it has a better chance of catching the launch....Show more →
Douglas a bit of good news.
We spent a long weekend at the mountain cabin where we'll retire to in 372 days. I saw 3 hummingbirds there. We have Oswago/Beebalm occurring there naturally....of course not in great spots for imaging, but lots of it. My seeds have arrived but I also need to study transplanting from one spot to another and creating a area dense with it.
Thanks for keeping me motivated with your awesome shots.

Thanks Robert. I just bought a couple "Black and Bloom Salvia" plants, a newer version of the "Black and Blue Salvia", which I noticed the hummers love! It will not survive in really cold temperature though. I ordered 4 Hot Lips salvia after reading Geoff's post, hope they will make it in the winter in Maryland.
I think Beebalm, Cardinal flowers, the right type of Salvia, plus one or two feeders, will keep you busy with hummers.

Some different kind of BIF shots from yesterday with the A9, One of the reasons I bought the A9 is the 20 FPS that increases the probability of capturing the exact moment the two jets crossing. The weather was just horrible. But I was glad they still had a show. 90% of the airshows this year have been cancelled. This is the first one I went to this year. Normally I would have gone to 4 or 5 airshows by this time of the year.

Indigo bunting hiding from me in an autumn olive bush - shot through the branches of a maple. A9 +FE200-600 + 1.4TC. No crop. The file loses a lot downsized for the web - maybe I need to get better at that.
