I know several people with the A7R4 200-600 and 600mm f4 that go to the same place as me to photograph the Peregrines hunting, at the end of the day I get far more keepers with the D850 and cheap 200-500 so I lost interest in the A7R4 . Its usually frustration for them and they go to the car swap to the A9 , we wait around hours for the bird to come back with prey so you get one brief chance to get a shot . I may get an A7R4 but only after the AF is proved reliable

Understood. I still love the Riv; but for macro and landscaping...both rare events in my photographic life but semi-enjoyable when I shoot them....the a9 for wildlife which is my photo passion. But I can understand how some who bought the Riv just for BIF might be disappointed. Surely it can do it and I've lived it, but not the body I'd recommend for someone who is trying to nab Swallows or Kites 99 percent of the time.

Fingers crossed firmwares help sort it , Geoff’s recent A7R4 shots are showing it can be done .
Now I’ve got the A9ii 200-600 I was going to get a 500mm PF for the D850 later but might be tempted by the A7R4 instead . I’m enjoying using the A9ii but definitely missing the D850 mp’s for a lot of shots

Having lived and birdwatched on the same place for >25 years, it is rare for me to see a new species, but it was a red-letter day today. Yellow-billed cuckoo. Not the greatest image per se, but I've heard him/her for a month or so way up in the canopy and didn't know what it was; finally got a lens on it. Technical question: I just could *not* get the focus off the tail or adjacent leaves/branches and onto the eye. Not enough contrast there I guess. Any hints how to do? Used AF-on with shutter-AF off, tracking expand flexible spot, A9 FE200-600 + 1.4 TC (was hoping to get a launch).Maybe need to set up a memory mode to switch off tracking, turn on shutter-AF, and lens button focus lock? I had a somewhat easier time getting songbirds in dense brush in focus on my A7iii. (In retrospect after getting the first image I should have quick dialed up the f-stop from 9 to about 13 for another set.)

Thank you very much! The two in the first picture are siblings, one is much bigger than the other. Maybe she ate more fish. I have gone to the nest 8 times in the last couple days, morning, noon and late afternoon.
Here is another shot of the mom (or dad) and the chick from the same outing yesterday afternoon. The chick still had a fish in its neck. It's off focus. The feeding happened so fast, maybe 3 seconds. They were facing away from me so I didn't get good shots of the feeding.
I reworked two of the previously posted feeding images by removing some small tree branches from the frames. I am new to Photoshop so the learning curve is big. Here they are, also shot with the A7RIV. I have an A9 too but I figured that the herons were not flying, I would chose the A7RV's resolution over the A9's AF and FPS.

I'm curious - for all of these great shots with the 200-600mm, how often are all of you using a tripod setup vs. shooting handheld? When I owned the lens, I found it quite cumbersome to shoot it handheld and didn't enjoy dragging out my large tripod either but now I miss the reach that this lens offered.
