I updated my lens and have the latest firmware on my RIV, and my Sigma 35 1.2 focuses just fine in AF-C and AF-S. Just used it yesterday and had no problems.
That's strange though. I'll try it again after work and report back.

Didn't have the chance to use the updated FW on the lens with the R3 as I dumped it over a month ago. However, I have been continuing to use it with the new FW on the A9 which has been stellar due to the noticeable performance improvement. FWIW, I didn't have any issues when I was using it on the R3 previously in either focus mode.

I updated and it killed my lens. It wont focus at 1.2 and just pumps. If you go to 1.4 it works just fine. I sent a movie of it via the agent to Japan and they were looking in to it. I got impatient and sent it back and apparently there is a fresh one arriving today which I will not update. Body is an A7R4.

This is so weird that same camera, same firmware yet we are experiencing different results

I would like to buy the lens, but the ugly cat-eye bokeh on the edge is still holding me back. :-(
If that is your main concern, then the only solution is not to shoot wide open I think.
Besides, I don't find this lens particularly bad in that regard compared to other fast lenses...

I ordered another one and see what is possible. Maybe you can also clip away the edge and have a 40mm or 45mm lens...

This is weird. I only shoot this lens at f1.2 ( ) on the A7RIV in AF-C... most all portraits using Eye Focus. I would say that over 95% of my shots are critically sharp on the eyes. I'm using the latest firmware updates and have never experienced 'pumping'.

Another morning shoot here in Shanghai at the Bund, just love the mornings here, whereas afternoons and nights it’s people going a mile a minute, in the early AM birds are around, sun rising nice and quiet, reminds me of my time in New York, cities with two different personalities

A short update on the/my autofocus problem for those who are affected:
After getting really angry and forcing the seller legally to replace the lens, the Sigma service department suddenly offers me a repair! They told me they had spoken to Sigma Japan and I suspect that there is still no date for a new problem-solving upgrade.
(Therefore) They offered me to reset the firmware. But now it is too late because I will receive a new copy with hopefully the old Firmware from the seller.
This is just for your information. So it is possible to repair the lens at short notice by undoing the upgrade.
