I may have to pick up this lens again. I don't usually repurchase lenses, but every time I look at the images I took with it there's just something special about them. Although I'm primarily a 50mm shooter, there is one thing the Sigma can do better in crop mode than my 50mm can do at full resolution and that's achieve a much closer minimum focus distance. I do a lot of food photography, but not in a studio. If I'm my 50mm lenses, I have to back up around 7 inches more for focus to the point where I'm cropping for composition in post - which is bringing me close to the resolution of the 35 1.2 in crop mode (it might even be worse resolution, but I don't know how to calculate it). Being that I'm not usually shooting with such a narrow DOF, the difference between the cropped 1.2 and either a native f/1.4 or f/2 on the 50mm lens doesn't really matter since I'm usually at f/4-5.6 anyway.
I do have the Batis 40, which can get me close enough when needed without having to crop in camera or in post, but the rendering of the Batis in general shooting situations doesn't excite me as much as the 35 1.2 or the Sony 50 1.4 ZA.

You going to love it! Welcome to the club Make sure when you get it that you test larger focus pulls to make sure there is no squeaking sounds. I had to exchange my first copy since it had that problem but the 2nd copy was perfect Works amazing in AF-C with eye-AF! Might be my favorite event/environmental portrait lens ever. I paired this with the sigma 105 1.4 and it was an incredible combo for a birthday. Pin sharp, really high hit rate with eye-af. The rendering for outdoor portraits is something really unique and beautiful. I actually don't like using the lens profile in lightroom with it as it brightens the corners way too much.

Hi everybody,
I didn't want to start a new thread with my question, so thought I'd post it here. It's regarding the AF performance with the Sigma. Whenever there is a back-light (or general lack of contrast) I have serious problems getting accurate AF (hit rate is maybe within 20-30%, everything else is slightly or seriously out of focus). The lens works just fine in high contrast light (daylight or artificial), tracks and locks on without problems. I'm using AFC, tracking sensitivity set to 1 on a Sony A7R IV.
I had a similar experience (to a much lesser extent) with the Zony 55, so I know back-light can cause issues, but this seems excessive. Can anyone more experienced with this lens share their thoughts? Maybe I'm missing something (besides shots). I can still return the lens for an exchange, but am reluctant to if this is normal behavior since the lens is otherwise fantastic (stopped down is excellent for landscapes too).
Here is an example where the issue can be seen (slight miss-focus), pretty much stationary sceene:
