It has ruined the image, turning a pretty good soft OOF compliment that the designers work hard to achieve, into a dreadful 'half moon rising' soap suds effect, well beyond any hope of reasonable recovery. Even the tree foliage is fragmented, damaged. The control has turned a high end prime into a consumer zoom in these circumstances, as any photo editor would affirm.
I'm hoping others don't read this as a negative against the lens itself. From what I understand, images made with many of the fast lenses will exhibit the same degradation of out of focus rendering when high shutter speeds are used with EFCS on, if shooting at a wide aperture.

Yes is not a specific lens issue. saxguy wrote:

I just went through a fair amount of images on Flickr taken with the Sigma 35 1.2 and I'm starting to think this lens may never leave one of my a7r iv bodies.

I dont even own the lens, and swore off every buying a 700g+ lens, but I cant look away
knowing how sigma depreciates, I'm just waiting for a spectacular deal around the 1K mark, it WILL happen.

EFCS can reduce vibration and thus improve sharpness at slow shutter speeds. I leave EFCS off all the time on my A7RIII unless on a tripod which i almost never do.
Anyone know: does silent mode turn EFCS on (I’d assume yes)?
EFCS is so annoying that I'm either shooting fully silent or full shutter, I simply dont use it anymore, problem solved.

Only have an A7riii but it's very surprising how well the lens handles. It may take a while considering this is Sigmas current "Flagship" lens but it'll hit that price point eventually.

I'm certain you will be able to get one for said price at some point, just don't know when. Even at present though, I know people that have already gotten them for about 150 off through GT over the last month.

I find this a bit confusing. Isn't EFCS by definition electronic front curtain shutter? As that adversely affects bokeh, then why wouldn't silent mode shutter also have the same impact on bokeh, as the shutter is entirely electronic?

Not sure I am understanding your question but to clarify, what I was proving with the photos and video I did was that EFCS (electronic front curtain shutter) does affect the rendering but the Silent Shooting (full electronic shutter) does not.

The mechanical shutter that ends the exposure in EFCS is responsible for bokeh degradation. I don't understand the physics but there are explanations online you can search for. As there is no mechanical shutter in silent mode, there is no bokeh degradation (though rolling shutter can be a problem for moving objects or whip pans).

I don't know the exact scientific explanation behind it, but I've always just assumed that it stems from the fact that it is using two different mechanisms for the shame shutter actuation and that the effect is generated somewhere in between. EFCS still requires a mechanical rear curtain whereas full ES covers both the front and rear for the entire actuation.

When using the mechanical shutter there are 2 curtains. With "ECFS on" the Front Curtain stays open but the rear shutter still closes.
?t=35
"Silent Mode" uses no shutter so the image/bokeh is not being affected/cut off. Maybe someone else can explain it better but that's how I understand it lol
Ok, thanks to all who replied. It looks like the EFCS bokeh problem has something to do with the shadow cast by the 2nd mechanical curtain. And I gather this doesn't happen with all-mechanical or all-electronic shutter.

Incredible pictures! Really glad to see such beautiful rendering by this magnificent glass. I just switched to sony A7R iii from nikon d810 (very happy I did!) and have no lenses at the moment. The sigma 35 1.2 seems to be a great first lens as 35mm is such a nice versatile focal length for some environmental portraits and landscapes.

I ordered mine from adorama a few days ago and totally didn’t realize it was a holiday until mid-week. I cancelled and ordered one from Amazon that will be here Monday as I need it for next weekend.
I do have a question, though. Being that everyone seems to have theirs locked at 1.2, what strength ND filter should I order for outdoor daytime shooting with the A7r to be safe? I usually use Breakthrough X4 CPLs to cover both polarization and some light reduction, but I’m not sure it will be enough with the 1.2 aperture.

I am using 3 stops, polarizer is sometimes not enough imho.
Furthermore a polarizer may have a side effect one does not want in his or her pictures.
