I’ve been resisting this one, but since I find the 24GM a little too wide for general shooting and there’s no great 28, I may have to pull the trigger. I loved the RX1R ii and felt comfortable with the 35mm focal length, but I’m losing faith in a RX1R iii. The Sigma/A7r iv combination will be “slightly” bigger, but the results are worth the carry from what I can see.

I have this lens for over 2 weeks but except for some test images for the initial evaluation, I haven’t used it. I took this lens to Vegas last week and I saw this wedding couple at the Fountain at Bellagio. I asked the pro photog and the couple whether it is okay prior to taking a few shots. Here is one of them. It sure is a superb lens even at wide open aperture, which is the main reason for me to get it. I don’t think I will stop the lens down smaller than f/2, if at all unless used for landscape, of course.
Is it big and heavy? Yes, but I gladly put up with those parameters for the image quality it generates.

Has anyone tested if EFCS on/off makes a difference in bokeh at 1.2 over 1/1000?
Why hasn’t Sony implemented the automatic EFCS cut off option in firmware yet which would be extremely useful for this 1.2 lens in good light. On my A7R3, it’s not even an option for custom button so menu diving is required.

Not enough pressure from users/customers?
No idea..I have been nagging them about this for so long yet nothing.

Glad to help make your wallet lighter , George! It is worth it though, as you will see.

The difference in bokeh rendition is really not that much, if any. I believe there is another way to circumvent the “issue”, and that would be to actually use the full electronic shutter. Just make sure that the file setting is to set into the uncompressed mode to get the 14-bit. Not much suitable for fast action photography though unless you use an A9.

Sorry but I have to respectfully disagree on that. To my eyes the difference is very clear and is like losing part of what you are paying for when going for smooth fast glass.
Here are some quick samples around the house. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Dg4i5Zoh0PWFTuwdLTdo3XZEIbmI3wrg
Those are full file sizes to check but even the small size attached to this post is clear to me.

What was the shutter speed on those, Luis? Yes, there is a difference alright but to me you can tell only if you do a direct comparison. And I understand that YMMV. The difference can be evened out with a little bit of PP. Yes, if you apply the same edit to both, the difference will still be there but it will be less.

EFCS can reduce vibration and thus improve sharpness at slow shutter speeds. I leave EFCS off all the time on my A7RIII unless on a tripod which i almost never do.
Anyone know: does silent mode turn EFCS on (I’d assume yes)?

Not home right now but you can download from the link.
I disagree because then what's the point of having such big expensive lenses just to affect the rendering so noticeably then having to post? May as well buy a smaller cheaper slower lens.
To each is own

The difference is simple. If you buy and use a slower lens, you will get the rendition all the time where ever you go and whenever you use the lens. If you buy and use the faster lens, occasionally you get a slightly less smooth bokeh if your shutter speed goes faster than 1/1000sec but NOT always. As long as one is aware of the situation and adjust accordingly, then it should be fine. The maximum that you have to do in that case to alleviate the problem is to switch to the mechanical shutter when shooting under bright conditions.
p.13 #15 · Sigma 35mm f/1.2 Art E Mount Lens Image Thread
That's the problem...you call it slight when I see it as clearly worst. Guess we will agree to disagree because the differences are not small at all.
I will let my evidence speak for itself and each person can determine if the trade off is acceptable or not for their work.
Done with this topic
Regards

It’s very obvious to me even without comparing with a reference. For example, I definitely remember that Joshua’s last mermaid photo in the “FE images” thread is with EFCS on.

Impressive color and contrast wide open! Great shot, Joshua!

'I see it as clearly worst.'
It has ruined the image, turning a pretty good soft OOF compliment that the designers work hard to achieve, into a dreadful 'half moon rising' soap suds effect, well beyond any hope of reasonable recovery. Even the tree foliage is fragmented, damaged. The control has turned a high end prime into a consumer zoom in these circumstances, as any photo editor would affirm.

Silent Mode is NOT affected by the problem so no it does not turn on EFCS. Unless you mean if it turns it off which indeed it does as it is fully electronic shutter with that option
