Yeah doesn't matter to us in Europe, Sony and Tamron charge 20% more anyway here.
So the tariffs bring the US prices to the European level. Seems fair to me

I’ve read most of the pages of this thread but don’t remember — Has anyone tested for sun stars? How are they?

Thanks!

Many European countries have a higher VAT rate than the US. I stop here as we don’t want to go into politics here, since it’s a photo forum.

This mornings snaps all wide open - EFCS turned off this time except for I believe the first one. Bokeh continues to be a mixed bag but I'm liking it more the more I shoot with it. Check out that bee close to MFD!

Definitely not a knock on you, I think you got the best shots you could have here, but that bokeh is horrendous, especially for a $750 lens.

No offense taken - I like the out of focus area in the first shot, think the second shot is meh, and dislike the bokeh in the last. I paid $650 for mine so i’m comfortable with the pros vs cons.

I don't agree. The bokeh can be busy, but in some cases that adds interest to the image. The bokeh in the goldenrod shot is perfect.

This is all based on opinion - bokeh is not measurable and the bokeh that you like may be the bokeh that I dislike. Most modern lenses strive for razor sharpness, lightning speed, and buttery bokeh. High quality lenses that break those rules - character lenses, if you will - are refreshing. This lens and the Sigma 45/2.8 are such lenses and are polar opposites in how they render. I like them both.

On a similar line of thinking, the FE 50/1.8 has the most light transmission per dollar of all Sony lenses and you must be a moron if you bought anything else.

Any fault you can see with this kind of judgement?

Bokeh quality does not seem to the priority of the optical design of this lens....nor is it the value proposition of this lens. And that's OK. There are very many lenses that cost significantly more than FE35 that have less than great bokeh, but have value propositions elsewhere.

I'd say that its more common that a lens will fail the scrutiny of the typical person here...and more of a rarity that a lens has superlative bokeh. 85GM is one of the few lenses that I think would pass the smell test of people here.

Batis 85 $1,200 Bubble bath bokeh balls!

Sigma 135 $1,400 It's raining easter eggs!

I'm seeing a lot of sample images from this lens, 35mm is my favorite focal length, and my opinion is that the harsh, unsightly boken is not worthy of my dollars. If other people find the lens worth their money because of the light weight, fast AF, etc, then more power to them! Bokeh rendering isn't, and shouldn't, be everyone's top concern. I'm just very underwhelmed by the vast majority of sample images I've seen from a rendering perspective (especially for the price for a nifty-fifty-esque lens) and that's ok, no need to get upset about it

Well this is the basic 35mm issue that we have been facing for awhile. Simply no perfect solution.

I've tried a ton of them. Everyone had a compromise somewhere in its design. I actually gave up trying but I'm still wanting one. To be honest there is no free lunch. Go for a rendering lens you give up Something else. Go for a modern lens you get sharp but renders badly. Some too slow, some too big. One reason the CV 40 has become popular is its a nice rendering lens and stopped down it's a nice landscape lens but it's not AF for a lot of folks . Heck could go on and on here about all of them

Increasingly I’m starting to think the best solution is using the 24GM on an A7R4 in crop mode.

I've said that several times but I get a lot of pushback on that comment. But yea I use it on events all the time . Kinda why I gave up looking . Rather have a good 40/45 AF

Now we have a 26mpx crop it's actually going to be more useful.

Careful, a certain someone will chime in about the loss of DR/ISO when using a lens in crop mode

"I’m starting to think the best solution is using the 24GM "

It's been that way even on the Riii already.

For me as I have gone through this with a lot of lens picking your poison on one of these may just be poison. It really is a tough call especially if your after one lens. It’s almost a two lens scenario. One for the rendering a lot of us like and one for great AF and sharpness. Just hard to find it in one lens. I can least say I put my money where it counts and tried maybe even a dozen different 35 lenses. Maybe less but I lost track

I know I have since I got the 24mm. It’s a great option that actually works and works well even at 18 Mpx. Obviously depends on output needs

I had the 24gm for a bit. Its not nearly as compact as the FE35 so I wouldn't consider it a substitute.

If you want a high performing 35, Sigma is the way to go.

I do like how the Sigma 35 1.2 renders no question. It’s the size that scares me. It’s as big as my 135 Sony which I love but not for a 5 hr shift of constant use. My arthritis can’t do that anymore for that long. It’s not a strength issue but a pain and that’s no fun.

All of this depends on what your doing and what expectations and needs you have. I have two lens kits so it makes these decisions easier. Just not convinced on this 35 1.8.
