Talking about Onion rings, I lead myself to believe that they would be as low as the 24 GM but at least with Cameralabs' copy it's actually no better than the Nikon Z (there could be some sample variation here).

There's no "onion rings" produced by the polishing quality of the aspherical element. If there are any concentric rings near the edge of the balls located towards the frame corner, they have a different cause than polishing - most likely astigmatism as already suggested. Here are some bigger balls for inspection. The ball is produced by the same specular source, in both photos, taken at f/1.8. In the vertical photo, there was bright sun and the ball is closer to the edge of the frame (and thus has a more out-of-round shape). In the horizontal photo there was a small cloud passing by so you have less contrast and a dimmer ball. I took these yesterday after reading an inane "review" on B&H photo site (of course it wasn't from a "verified buyer").
If you look carefully at the detail images, you'll notice a seemingly random pattern inside the ball that is consistent with the "XA" polishing process they use with GM lenses. So, while Sony designed this within the limits of a small and light lens, they didn't cut any corners with the manufacturing process and used their best tech there.

In France right now :

Canon 35 RF : €530
Sony FE35 1.8 : €700
Nikon 35 1.8 Z : €800

Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only person in the world who actually think that these three lenses are all interesting and all priced nearly exactly where they deserve to land (I'm expecting the Sony to go a few dozens euros lower after the launch phase is finished, maybe around €630-650 or so) .

Since when are prices lower in Canada ? What happened ? What is wrong with the world ? I can't compute such a reality.
EDIT : oops. Forgot about VAT. That would make the lens €650 or so in Europe so not that far from the current price.

I wonder then what the big deal is with the Nikon's onion rings (why is that a con in DPreview's review, and not in the Sony then ?). To be frank I don't get why this is such a focus of so many reviews when, at least when they're below a certain threshold, it's pointless to go further without correcting other aberrations in the first place which will degrade bokeh balls anyway.

(I prefer to not bring up the 24 GM shot as a comparison as the amount of defocusing is different).

Dunno. My only problem with the Nikon is that it comes with the wrong mount

To be honest, Sony looks noticeably better to me in that comparison. There are really no onion rings to speak of in my eyes (I think the same "onion rings" I see on my 24 GM) ...

One more tidbit discovered while going through the menus. It is compatible with the "Aperture Drive in AF" setting (you can set it as "Standard" or "Silent Priority").

Thanks for posting this info. Good to know this capability is hitting new lenses and is not only limited to expensive GM lenses. This should also mean that this lens can adjust aperture during tracking in A9 and A7RIV that have "Focus Priority" option available "Aperture Drive in AF" so lens can adjust and do AF-C tracking with wider aperture than selected.

I take an exception to the "noticeably" bit. I've purposefully added the Tamron to show an example with a significant difference. I'd say that the difference is far smaller between the two lenses on the left hand size than between them and the Tamron.
There are visible onion rings on the Sony shot IMO :

If that copy of the Sony's onion rings are deemed not a problem (and IMO they shouldn't, it's excellent for a modern lens), then that copy of the Nikon's shouldn't be seen as one either.
I think that both should be largely below the threshold where aberrations dominate and would be more "noticeable". For example, both the Sony and the Nikon above would be better off addressing their CA problems instead of trying to smooth their surfaces even further in my opinion.

I don’t think it really matters anyway. These 35/1.8 lenses are definitely not “bokeh lenses” i.e. not the first choice for creating nice out of focus anything. Either because they have “funky” bokeh anyway, for causes unrelated to “onions”; or just because there are better tools for achieving that, like the Sigma 35/1.2; or just forget about trying to use a WA for this and go 85 GM or 100 STF or Sigma 105 or 135 like most will do when pursuing this “bokeh” thing.

To me, the FE 35/1.8's specular highlights are very clean compared to other 35mm lenses. I can only see traces of onion ring pattern. There is only one aspherical element located towards the rear of the lens which already seems to subside this ill effect. In addition, I'm sure Sony is using its aspherical production tech which basically removes irregularities on the aspherical lens element.

I'm not a fan of onion rings at all. Just bugs me but this lens it's not glaring at you much. This is a modern lens design so bokeh and such are not the priority but being sharp is. It seems to be very sharp and competent lens. I'm still thinking of getting it. Cost wise it's the same I think of the 35 2.8 and 55 1.8 so not surprised at 750. Have not looked at there costs lately.

All I know is that Big Bronco has a notice on the wall reading “WANTED: Sony 35/1.8 test”

P.S. The other thing I know is that you are sensitive to AF speed and accuracy. This lens has it.

That's really the key here being native we are not going to get faster AF abilities and I do need that. I m leaning this way just want to get the A7rIV settled in my hands first. I did not pre order so need to find one

Actually I take that back I have a order on Amazon but I will cancel that once I find one without tax . Sorry tax man. Lol

How's your review of the lens coming along?

Yes, you're right - I missed the bottom one. Agreed also on the smaller difference between Sony and Nikon than Tamron, though I guess I'd have to go through a number of real life photos between these two to see if it actually is noticeable in normal circumstances .

This mornings snaps all wide open - EFCS turned off this time except for I believe the first one. Bokeh continues to be a mixed bag but I'm liking it more the more I shoot with it. Check out that bee close to MFD!

Looking good so far but I'm not willing to pay the extra tariff money for this lens. I'm sending it back and will wait a little while. Another reason for me is that Tamron is coming out with Primes that I'll probably like better because of their optics and close focusing ability. I had the Tamron 28-75 and was impressed by the sharpness of it.

We don’t know if the Tamron primes will be made in China or not. Doesn’t matter to us in Europe anyway.
