It is not too busy but it is a bit crunchy or hard edged. Not smooth and no way even close to the RX1 Sonnar.

Amazingly sharp. The bokeh is more distracting than I would like, but your images and Viramati's images are enticing, especially given the small size and AF. The 35/1.8 images that I have seen seem to have more punch/pop/fairy dust than the Batis 40/2 images. Someone said it earlier, this will be another Batis killer.

But I also agree with realVivek - I know the Sonnar 35/2, and this lens is no Sonnar 35/2

From all that I have seen the Batis 40 is totally off the table now. Never did totally like it anyway . That's me though and I really want to have the AF/MF switch. I use that often

Totally agree. I sold my rx1rii this year and this is no substitute. However I now have the flexibility back of being able to change lenses and also the speed of operation of my a7riii so I’ll take the compromise in IQ

I'm in the opposite boat on this one, as I already have the Batis and so far I don't see a reason to jump ship but that's a good point that af/mf switch + button can make the difference for some.

Yea if you have it today than no reason to switch. It’s a good lens but 1124. Just looked at the price is it worth the extra 375 more. So if your buying today it’s a question one needs to answer. The Sony may not be the best bokeh but it is good.

I think their rendering is similarly structured but the Batis has way better CA correction. It's a tough call but if compactness is a priority, the Sony seems to be the better choice.

Personally, I will wait for the Sony GM in this range and in meanwhile, I'm still enjoying shooting with the FE 24/1.4 GM + FE 50/1.4 ZA. (or Sigma 45/2.8 when packing light)

Well it may never even go outside to shoot. It’s really a event lens more than anything. CA stuff far more important in my MF kit. I’m going to put this out of my mind until I get the A7rIV. Maybe Tamron

Any AF lens that can't be dual purpose won't get too far with me. Of course, there is no great 35mm landscape lens! The Voigtlander 40 comes the closest, and it more like 42mm.

I should have kept my great copy of the Loxia 35. I didn't like it blob flaring so I sold it, but it was sharp, great color, rendered nicely.

That’s really the big issue here is anyone depending on one lens that does a variety of shooting there simply is no clear cut winner. Even myself wanting a event lens bugs me that it can’t do let’s just say nice bokeh for instance. Since now I have the CV 21 ,CV 50 and CV 75 I thought if I grabbed the CV 40 instead it does two things . One it gaps me better but second I get a real 35 lens if I want bokeh , okey it’s a touch longer it’s okay. Than just get a common 35 1.8 just for the event crap. The bigger issue is giving up my CV 50. I don’t really want too, bokeh has no onion rings. Have I said how much I hate onion rings lately.

Any direction I turn I’m in hell. This should be on the other thread, but I know everyone here is thinking about it. I’m just being vocal. Hell I had thoughts of selling my GM 24 buy the 17-28 and the Sigma 35 1.2 . Done
It’s actually not a bad thought. Anyone actually think of that

Okay, bokeh is definitely not a particular strength of this lens.

Don’t sell the 24 Guy! 🙂

Of course only you know what works for you. But give up the magical and small 24? I couldn’t bring myself to do it! And with you getting your A7R4 soon, you’ll really have a two edged weapon with the 24. Full frame 24mm at F1.4 (which gives a look few lenses can do) and then a 26mp “35/2” with the qualities found in the RX1rii. Don’t sell - I think you’ll regret it. 🙂

It's as good/fast as the 28-75 if you've used that. I'd say focusing it's 90% as fast as an equivalent Sony lens (I used a 16-35 f4 for comparison). In low light I was getting more accurate focus with the tamron though.

For those professional events you do in low light, I would not want a lens without fast and accurate AF. For this reason alone, I give the FE 35/1.8 a try.

24GM looks quite a bit bigger IMO.

I had the 24GM briefly, but sold it because while its pretty small, I don't consider it compact and it doesn't do it for me as an everyday carry type lens.

Benchmark for compact lenses for me is the Loxia and CV lenses...along with the FE55. FE 35 is more in line with these lenses than the 24GM is.

Yea I’m not going to sell the GM 24 but slightly tempting. The 28-75 was not the best in low light. This Sony is probably the one. But I’ll wait out Tamrons announcement
