Help educate me. Setting cost aside, compared to the 100-400 with 1.4tc, what are some of the possible benefits if this lens is real? 2/3 stop faster. Is it likely that a G lens would be sharper than a GM with 1.4tc? It'd certainly be more weight... Is it just mostly the cost savings that make it appealing? I'd like to love it, but I am hesitant, especially since it is likely to be considerably heavier.

People pay a lot of money for an extra stop, the 70-200gm is a grand more expensive than the f4 version
And for a 1/3 of a stop more you get 840mm with the 1.4
IQ, weight and price will be the deciding factors, I am surprised we have not seen sigma and tameron not modify their 600mm zooms yet both would be direct competition to this lens and both have very good reviews,

PHD means you are book smart not street smart or have the requisite amount of common sense. We all know people with PHD's who are not the sharpest tack in the box.

I hope but you're automatically at a disadvantage with the PH.D. based on the couple hundred I have met in my life. Of course if you are sharp outside of your specialized field and demonstrate an open mind and are fun person to be around who does not take their education too seriously I would certainly not hold that against you.

I must really be an outlier then.
3 engineering degrees and I've been on my own in the "business world" making a living as an owner of a consulting and engineering services company with a handful of employees since 2004. I knew I was unique, but apparently even more so by your experience. I wonder how many people you've met that had a PhD and you didn't even suspect it because they didn't fit your notion.

What kind of logic is that? "We" all know people without PhD, who are not the smartest, too; that doesn't mean "we" immediately generalise to all of them, even though some of them even become POTUS or comment in forums like this one.

I now just shoot wildlife with primes (400 GM, 135 GM, 24 GM, and sometimes 85/1.8 and Loxia 21 for landscapes) and am loving it especially because of what I can get done with the larger apertures. I sold my 100-400 and will probably sell my 70-200/2.8 since I’m not using it. Of course you can get a lot of flexibility with the zoom but to me 600 at f6.3 vs 560 at f4 on the 400 GM with 1.4x is not that interesting.
I'd be very interested to hear how you make your 24mm GM work for wildlife photography

I believe this is an internally zooming lens. I know others have disagreed with me. And I could still easily be wrong; I'll get to that. But here's my case for internal.
Look at the shape of widest part of the barrel. I think some, upon first glance, assume this part of the lens "prototype" is a lens hood; it isn't. Now look at the picture looking down the top of the barrel. It reveals ridges along the circumference of the bevel. This indicates that there will be something attached to it. Once whatever attaches to this end is attached it will effectively lengthen the lens. I would guess there will be a front element with some rubberized edging that would attach to this point. This will likely add a few centimeters to the total length of the final design of the lens. So for those saying this lens isn't long enough to be an internally zooming lens I offer this bit of conjecture.
Now consider the shape of the "prototype." Where would the lens extend from? From the top of the barrel? I don't see why the barrel would be shaped this way if a telescoping piece were to extend out beyond the top piece since it has this outward flange. Look at the 100-400. It's a tube. It doesn't have increasingly wider segments leading to the end of the barrel.
Could it extend from between the edge of the zoom ring and the top of the barrel of the "prototype"? It could. This would be consistent with the design architecture of the Sigma and Tamron super tele zooms in this range. But I ask where is the gap? There's no visual clue that this is where the barrel would extend. Again if you look at the design language of the other telescoping zooms Sony makes, the 100-400 and 70-300, you'll see in both cases there are gaps between where the fixed parts of the barrels end and the zooming (extending) parts begin. This of course doesn't rule out that the "prototype" isn't finished, but it looks awfully finished to me. To the point where it has a lens badge with consistent labeling.
Lastly, there is no tension ring for the zoom. Nor do I see any zoom lock.
TL: DR I think there's a reasonable chance that this lens is an internal zoom. And that my friends would be this lens' killer app. ...Show more →
