Sorry for injecting my little Ph.D story earlier. We were bored waiting for the real thing. Things can go down hill faster than the A9's AF, especially when politics is injected in the conversation.

Sure, but at least if it's not bright white then there a chance it might not be the very first thing you see when you turn in its general direction
If you don't like white for the big lenses, Lens Coat makes covers for the big lenses by Canon, Nikon, Sony. Below is a link to Lens Coat Covers for different Sony and Minolta lenses; they are available in Black, and different Camo

The lenscoats are good, but if your camera bag is in the least bit tight on the lens, the neoprene unrolls. I finally gave up on covering the lens hood covering.

FE200-600mm launch event has started, per sonyalpharumors. The journalists are putting it through its paces. So it's real then.
Assuming this is the lens they're revealing at the event. It's all still possible the stolen lens is actually just a scrapped prototype for something we'll never see... My, wouldn't that be embarrassing for all of us who have populated this huge thread
I'm still hoping there's at least another lens or a camera body announced at the same time. These single lens announcements can be a little bit boring sometimes and Sony still has a lot of catching up to do before the Olympics.

I suspect I'll have to get one if I ever do end up springing for one of the Big Whites. The 70-200 is on my list, but damn those GM lenses are pricey...

I kind of like what I guess it seems to be the color of choice for long lenses but I wonder how white became the color of choice for tele lenses?
The only think I can think of is it reflects heat and does not show nicks or scratches as much sense they are more prone to getting nicked.
Any other thoughts of just someones idea that they should be white.
Some professional movie equipment is white maybe it had something to do with that?

3 engineering degrees and I've been on my own in the "business world" making a living as an owner of a consulting and engineering services company with a handful of employees since 2004. I knew I was unique, but apparently even more so by your experience. I wonder how many people you've met that had a PhD and you didn't even suspect it because they didn't fit your notion.

If populating a thread with speculation out of excitement and anticipation is the most embarrassing thing I do I’ve got to get out more! 😆

Or you can make your own out of neoprene for around $10 instead of $80. And with the Lens Coat, you have to remove that part over the main barrel every time you zoom down from 400mm.

I think it was Canon that started this trend, possibly to distinguish long L glass from non-L glass (I know, I know, there are black L lenses too). Minolta wasn't far behind. However, I don't think the color has a lot to do with how easily a lens shows scratches. The Minolta 200 2.8 G HS APO, for instance, is notorious for the white paint that easily peels off, revealing the silver metal underneath.

Don't know exactly why the white lens trend started but I believe it is a little safer in America to be slinging around a long white lens than a black lens. So I am thankful that the white lens trend continues.

Could someone really mistake a black supertele lens for an actual weapon or firearm in the US?

Lol, you guys are insane. Long, glass-heavy lenses are white because they are more prone to heat expansion issues, and a white lens stays cooler than a black lens. Fuji talked about this recently with their 200mm lens.
