Always the same discussion. f5.6 is f5.6, but it describes intensity per unit area. The light is distributed on a smaller sensor area, 2.25 times smaller, wheres f6.3 is less than a full stop larger. So at an equivalent 600mm, equal print size, you have more photons gathered with an f6.3 FF sensor compared to a crop sensor at f5.6 and get higher S/N ratio, if not DOF limited.
My preorder is in, so hopefully August 2 delivery.

Following up on Holger's post, the amount of light hitting the sensor is a function of the length of time the light is hitting the sensor, the brightness of the light hitting the sensor, and the size of the sensor. In photographic terms the length of time is determined by the shutter speed, the brightness of the light is determined by the aperture, and the size of the sensor is determined by the format of the camera or any cropping you would do from that format. All of these factors can be described in stops of light. Each stop is a doubling of one of these factors. Twice as long a shutter speed is another stop of light. Aperture we are used to talking about in terms of stops, but each stop is twice as big as a previous stop (e.g., the hole for f/1.4 is twice as big as the hole for f/2), and when the area of a sensor that you are using is twice as big as the area of another sensor you are using you have an additional stop of light. A FF sensor is over twice as big as and APS-C sensor in area and gives you about a stop and a third more light hitting the sensor when considered as a hole at the same aperture and shutter speed as an APS-C sensor.
This means that if you shoot a 400mm at f/4 on APS-C, then it will have the same angle of view and will have about the same amount of light hitting the sensor as a 600mm lens shot at f/6/3 on FF 35mm.

0.2x on DPReview. That makes sense. 0.28x with 1.4TC, 0.4x with 2xTC.
Compared to 0.14x for the 600/4GM, 0.196x with 1.4TC, 0.28x with 2xTC
Compared to 0.35x for the 100-400GM which would be 0.49x with the 1.4TC at 560. 0.7x with the 2xTC.

One thing of interest to me is that it has a 3 position focus limiter. I have missed this on my Sony and Nikon lenses as they usually only have full range or some distance to infinity. However, I feel the short range is very useful also...glad to see that on this lens. Also OSS mode 3 is available.
A lot of premium features for $2K. I'm scratching my head why this wasn't given the "GM" brand

No, light gathering and DOF is linked, you don't get one without the other.
F5.6 is F5.6 no matter what, but 400mm is 400mm no matter what and APS-C sized sensor is APS-C sized no matter what.
You get exactly the same image on a 400mm F5.6 on a APS-C sensor as you get with a 400 F5.6 on a full frame if you crop the full frame down to the centre APS-C sized area. If you had a perfect 1.5x teleconverter you could mount that and it would magnify the central APS-C sized area of the bare lens' imaging circle so it covers the entire full frame sensor. Then you get exactly the same light, image and depth of field on the full frame with TC as you get with APS-C sensor without TC. But then you have physically changed the focal length of the lens with 1.5x on full frame, and as physical aperture is the same you have also changed the f-stop with 1.5x. Thus you get exactly the same image as a full frame camera with a 600mm F8.4 as a 400mm F5.6 on APS-C camera. That is what they mean with equivalence.
If it wasn't like that we would all use smart phone sensors for telephoto shots by now.

That's the main negative imo. At the long range (~300-600mm), the lens will be f/6.3 and if there isn't plenty light, ISO could get too high pretty quickly as demonstrated in the video and therefore IQ (DR, resolution, color) will be denigrated. With the 100-400 GM at f/5.6, I usually avoid shooting in low light for this reason.
However, at $2,000, it's a bargain for its construction, AF speed and IQ and I'm sure the lens will perform great when shooting under strong lighting. For low light, the 600 f/4 GM version would be ideal but that extra 1 1/3 stop will cost ya an extra $11K!

Have a sneaking suspicion this lens is going to have a demand level on par with the 24 gm that was released earlier this year. Allen’s camera said I was first on thier pre order list so I’m optimistic there. As arbitrage stated in an earlier post this lens has a lot of premium features but is only listed as a g. Kind of reminds me some of the 24-105 that is also branded a g but optically could have been given the gm moniker as well. Guess time will tell how good this lens is. Early reviewers seem favorable, but, of course, they were all flown out by Sony on Sony’s dime.

I'm not getting rid of my 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 GM because it's used for many applications including action as well as landscapes.
With the 1.4x TC, it reaches 560mm but there is a 1-stop of light loss. (f/8)
The new 200-600 f/5.6-6.3 at 560mm is f/6.3 (2/3 stops faster), so for those using the 100-400 GM mainly with the 1.4x attached, the new 200-600 starts to make a lot of sense. (eg.: bird photography)

But, for the purpose of packing and travel, particularly when space and weight are an issue by air, the 100-400mm GM has a distinct advantage.
I am going to keep my 100-400mm GM and depending upon the findings by others and if I can afford it, purchase the 200-600mm in the future.
I suspect that we will be seeing the 400mm GM, 600mm GM, 200-600mm G, and quite likely the 100-400mm GM lenses at the Tokyo Olympics.

There are certainly good use cases for owning both these lenses. But I think for my photography...like 98% birds, I would be selling my 100-400GM for the 200-600. Won't sell till I get the 200-600 in my hands but can't see myself justifying holding onto the 1-4 if I'm happy with the AF and IQ of the 2-6. Especially if I can get good results with 1.4TC on the 2-6 then the 1-4 will go.

Smaller stores will take a list right now. Probably can't do that at the big NYC stores but I've got my name on a list in Canada and I wasn't the first. Demand will be high. Not sure how Sony distributes lenses. With Nikon, going to smaller stores is way better as they don't flood the big NYC stores with product just because they have more pre-orders. But maybe Sony works differently and ordering first thing from the big NYC stores could still work out??
My contact at a Canadian store said he had to choose how many to order and he ordered a lot The earlier you let a smaller store know you want it then they can order more sounds like. With the Nikon 500PF it was more like Nikon just sent them to whomever they chose.
