Sony today announced another new lens for their expanding full-frame FE lens lineup, the new FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS super-telephoto zoom lens (model SEL200600G).

SAR is saying 80% chance of this being correct. 90% that a lens will be announced.

They don't know what lens it is. Speculation off of previous rumors/patents is 500/4, 600/4 or 200-600 (or similar zoom).

What would you wish this to be?

I want to see the 500 or 600. Preferably both so I can compare specs/weights and not second guess buying one of them only to regret it next year when the other comes out.
I am assuming a 600 could match Canon 600III weight/balance. I really want to see what a new 500 could get down to in weight with the same smaller, rearward placed elements we have now seen in 400GM, 400III and 600III.

I would really like for this to be the 600/4. For what I like to shoot, it would pair nicely with the 100-400 GM.

How about a 500 2.8 with the same architecture of the 400 2.8 or with Fresnel optics.

As long as the long end of the lens, in case of a zoom, is longer than 400mm

. But like Mitesh, my preference would be a 600mm f/4 lens having a similar weight as the Canon 600mm Mark III lens.

It's almost certainly the 500 and 600, as the patents are already out there. I would like to see the patented 100/1.4 but it's extremely unlikely that Sony will undercut the 135 they just released so quickly.

You still can't cheat the front element diameter that would be 178mm. The 600/4 is 150mm...largest in current production.
Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 gives you an idea of the front element. Of course Fresnel design would reduce length and weight...it would be nothing like the Sigma but the front element would be huge so a thick lens unlikely to fit in any current backpack other than the dedicated single lens supertele ones.

I hope it is the 600 F4 since I have the 400GM I am currently utilizing the Canon 600 F4 II because it is heavy and does not AF like my Sony 400 GM.

I would also very much like to see a 200-600 6.3 and think it would be a huge seller.

A 300 2.8 would also be a nice addition but for me at least I think with the 400 2.8 in place there is little reason for a 500 F4 in comparison to the other lenses I mentioned.

The only real advantage of a 500 is reaching out to 700 with the 1.4x with the 500 otherwise the 400 has 500mm covered.

Also for someone who does not already have a 400GM to split the middle and forgo the 600 F4 however for wildlife but IMO a 600 is required for wildlife and utilizing a 1.4x as well.

Depending upon how good the 200-600 zoom is I can see getting rid of my 400 GM and using it and a 600 GM in it's place and perhaps a 300 2.8.

There are too many choices and these are big honking lenses it's not like you can go out with three of them. I will take my 400 & 600 in the car and swap them in the middle but to date have not carried both at once.

I would be interested in hearing what others have to say on how they go out with too long tele lens.

I know I don't go very far with my cast iron Minolta 600f4 but the Sony 500f4 at 1/2 the weight is not too much of a burden. Really if I am going very far and want a camera easily available, the RX10IV gets the calling.

I walk for two hours sometimes three with my 400GM on a Gitzo monopod extended resting on my shoulder or my 600 Sony a beast with my Really Right Stuff TVC44 tripod and Len Coat pad and padded leg sleeves. Not an issue at all but I am a big guy 6'3 230lbs and in shape.

It is not my favorite thing to do but getting good images makes it worthwhile.

I think a lightweight sans 5 oz Metabones adapter 600 F4 would be fine on a monopod but at that length and 840 with 1.4x a tripod is a must. But I can probably get by just fine with my TFC34 tripod which is a heck of a lot easier to carry because the top is not spaced far apart.

I shoot on the raised wooded walkways in the wetlands that are very prone to people walking and vibrations or would probably not use the TVC44 and use the TFC34 instead if hiking on ground.

Personally I am keeping mine and selling it when the Sony comes out so it is only a half step price wise instead of writing such a big check all at once like I did with the 400 GM. Once is enough.

Having shot with the 400 GM and realizing the utility of a fast telephoto prime that works well with extenders, I can imagine a universe in which I would own both the 400 GM and 600 GM (assuming Sony introduces one). Of course, in that universe, I’d also be divorced, so there’s that.

The 400GM is a niche lens kind of I am not sure if I will keep mine when the 600 comes out because I am not a sports shooter and can get by with my 100-400GM when needed. The 400 is a great lens for Zoos with and without the 1.4x but it is kind of a in-betweener for such an expensive lens.

It depends upon what they do with a 300 2.8 which I feel would be much easier to handle for BIF and more versatile with a 1.4x having 300 & 420 cover and what they do with a 200-600 zoom.
